Show lilLLOU Killon is not the first woman continued from front I always knew I wanted to be a public servant, Killon said. The personality inventory showed me to be a type A. We tend to be perfectionists and work well under stress. But even knowing that, Killon never considered being an EMT or firefighter until Turning Point. Through the program she took the EMT course with the idea of it being a learning experience only. Even after completing the course she didnt dream shed be on the emergency front line everyday. Killon describes herself as a motivated and driven person, who has no problem going after what she wants. This summer, shell add another learning experience as she becomes a firefighter for the National Forest Service in the Dutch JohnVernal area. There is some chance the job will become full time, but its not likely. And when her summers experience fighting wildfires is over, shell probably return to Roy to use her newfound knowledge working the wildlifeurban interface (that area, usually in the foothills, in which houses and forest land meet, creating major problems for homeowners if a forest fire erupts). While Roy has no such land, her experience will be invaluable when Roy joins other firefighting agencies in Ogden, North Ogden and Pleasant View, said Roy Fire Chief Noel Padden, who believes firefighters should take advantage of opportunities for additional training. Killon is lucky she has supportive parents and an who wants her to succeed. They all work to accommodate her schedule and see that her youngsters get taken care of too. Killons seen a change in her youngsters since she started working with the fire department. During the California earthquakes, they were proud to tell their friends their mom did similar work to some rescuers highlighted in the news. And her daughter is now thinking of being a nurse. CABLE continued from front Bountiful and TCI Cablevision must come to terms on a new contract during 1994 for cable TV. We can negotiate with any company that wants to come in, Mahan said. The companies must meet our ordinance before they can set up the business. Bountiful officials want to keep part of the agreement that governs two-wa- y communications intact and the of contract. TCI is fighting part that clause as company officials fear that more modernized technology will be allowed unfair advantage in the future for other companies and modes of communication. No one really knows what will happen as new developments occur on the information highway, City Manager Tom Hardy said. A wired system might take different forms and create new technology. Bountiful wants to protect the two-wa- y communication for access to these new technologies and to protect the citys rights in the future. the last. Her supervisors and coworkers agree shes a hard worker and they enjoy her company too. Captain Merrill J. Beck calls her a joy to work with. He said shes always asking what she could have done better and takes the lessons to heart. He notes its not unusual for her to sit down with the paramedics (who have more training than EMTs) and question them on this procedure or that technique. Most of Killons work centers around her FMT training which she received in December, 1992. About 80 percent of the departments calls she found there helped her realize she wasnt the only one sorting through problems in her life. Down the road Killon is thinking about getting some nursing training. with an eye to working in the emergency room just one more learning experience. are medical. The men of the department dont have a problem working with Killon, although they kid her more than they would a man, but shes good at handing it right back. find Several of her an advantage to having a woman along. If the EMT team is called out on a major emergency like a male in cardiac arrest, its easier for a woman to put her arms around an upset woman watching her husband being worked on, than it is for a man. Paramedic Lee Watts said there have been times hes wanted to comfort a woman in a similar situation, but felt it wasnt appropriate. It seems natural. A woman has more empathy towards females and children. he said. EMTfirefighter Ron Latham agrees, adding its also sometimes easier for Killon to examine a female patient than for one of the men to. DISTRICT continued from front Latham calls her one of the gather they had asked the television guys, and he says, We dont treat crew to leave and then her any different. Assistant Chief Stan Robbins said the Roy Fire Department has worked with two other women from the Turning Point program and two or three other women. He said theres always adjustments to be made for both men and women when a woman comes on the job, but overall theyve been pleased with the womens performance and theyll hire more in the future. Killon has kept in touch with several of her Turning Point class commuRights to this two-wa- y nication shouldnt be given away, Councilman Harold Shafter said. We should fight to keep it. Hardy added that TCI officials claim that if Bountiful continues to communication have the two-wa- y clause in its contract that other cities will follow suit and attempt similar negotiations and guidelines. Another part of the negotiations for a new contract will include hiking the franchise tax from 3 percent to 5 percent to gain more revenues from cable TV in Bountiful. There are so many unanswered questions about the untraveled information highway and future technology it will make these new negotiations difficult, Hardy said. Hardy also told the council that the two-wa- y communication phrase might be taken out and at a later time to salvage the initial franchise agreement. physical, Town Best Buy In - things got said Allen. When he arrived he found Wilkins and several other district employees in a heated argument. The district called the police because they thought things were going to get out of hand, Allen explained. He added that Wagstaff was complaining of a sore left leg from the fall he took earlier. We just talked about it and the television crew agreed to conduct their interviews outside. Wilkins denies that she grabbed the camera lens. They were trying to force themselves into the meeting. I had my hand on the end of the lens and I kept it there. I did not down. He push the camera-ma- n backed into a table and fell, she said. Wilkins said she felt the sensitive nature of the meeting would have been interrupted by a television camera. It inhibits and intimidates free discussion. We wanted the privacy of not having every word said on camera. Weve always provided free access to the press. We have a very open environment. Wilkins said she felt it was not appropriate to be shooting footage of the discussion. FARMINGTON Rep. James Hansen, a resident of Farmington representing Utahs First Congressional District in V.
