Show -- Friday, August 27, 1993 1 5 CUPPER Summerhays family swings for success By JAY TAYLOR go with Elizabeth to Costa Mesa, Sports Writer Calif, for the girls' U.S. Junior Amateur. July 30: Ann and Elizabeth leave for Costa Mesa (Ann home only 15 minutes between flights) July 31: Lynn and Boyd leave Portland directly for Albuquerque to play as the youngest member of the Utah America's Cup team Aug. 8: Elizabeth to Junior America Cup at Reno, Nev. Aug. 9: Drive Boyd, Mary and Daniel to Wendover for Utah Junior Golf at Toana Vista Utah's wisely acknowledged first family of golf could have its own Summerhays Quest Golf Tournament. A sponsorship would be only natural since the manager of these touring sibling champions has created of necessity a family golf tournament that the Franklin people could market. For family golf scholarship provider and mentor Lynn Summerhays and his wife, Ann, (family manager, logistical support officer and head cheerleader), golf is the compelling Aug. 19: the Hogan (return Aug. Aug. 22: N.C. as the interest, entertainment and vacation focus as well as a forum for teaching values. All seven children in this Farmington family have earned championships and learned much more than golf technique along the way, according to their mother. Ann, the mother of these talented children, doesn't golf; yet she might be the game's most sincere advocate and sage, eloquent spokesperson. "Golf creates self discipline in children. It is an where they individual sport compete against the course. It promotes a spirit of integrity; the better players are totally honest." Then as if she feels a need to justify the familys huge commitment, she adds, "A family can choose any interest for spending a lot of time together. Golf is our tool and vehicle to enjoy together." Lynn, former captain of his University of Utah golf team, obviously could have been a golf professional as is his brother, Bruce and his father, Preston. Having chosen careers in teaching and business, he still hasnt gotten far The Summerhays family of Farmington and golf have proven to be a successful partnership. Family members have achieved greatness at all levels of competition. ALL IN THE FAMILY: from golf. In 1991 he qualified for the men's Utah State Amateur at Hidden Valley Golf Course (along with his son, Boyd, who at age 12 was the youngest ever to play). He was instrumental in getting the Utah Junior Golf Association organized and presently serves as president of the board of directors. It is no wonder, then, that Ann would say, "Lynn wanted to teach his children to do the thing he loves to do." So teach them Lynn does! At their home he cut three holes in their new lawn (Ann says a refried bean can is just the right size for to. .wtotototawi V-v- i 10 and under the cup). He insists that the kids use real balls and they have "only lost a few windows." For wintertime practice, Lynn built an activity room big enough for basketball with a carpeted putting green as a floor. As Ann describes it, "Lynn has become like a mother duck with all these seven ducklings, taking them out after work to play golf (at Oakridge Country Club), where it can also be a beautiful, quiet place for teaching." "First David (a returned LDS missionary who is a sophomore on the BYU golf team) went out with Dad, then Rebekah (also now a BYU student on an academic scholarship). I thought, I can keep sending them off with Dad and pretty soon he'll have the kids and I'll have some time for myself." That time for herself now can resemble a five ring family circus as she manages her household along with tournament schedules and travel arrangements for the five who still play competitively. Consider the family itinerary just for the weeks between July 16 and Aug. 24 (not including the Utah regular Junior and AFFAIR: Summerhays brothers Daniel (left) of spon. the family David (right) prepare for another round FAMILY the Junior World Tournament (Boyd, 14 and Daniel, 9, competed on two different courses on the same days, with Dad watching one, Mom the other. Boyd finishes in first place with rounds of 66, 71, 70. Daniel was 10th after two rounds and finished at 20th in the the girls' National PGA Junior Championship Aug. 24: Boyd to Nagoya, Japan for Japan Cup World Junior Championships Though Elizabeth, 17, returns on Aug. 27 in plenty of time to start school Aug. 30 as a senior at Davis High, Boyd will not return from Japan until Aug. 31 and will start classes at Farmington Junior High a few days late and with jet lag. For Mary, 11, and Daniel 9, school at Monte Vista Elementary will end a Utah Junior Golf season in which they dominated their age groups.
