He ranked San Diego State, Fresno State and BYU as top contenders. He said at recent coaches meetings, most of the coaches have been real quiet. That means colleges have strong teams. "When you have a coach who gels up and talks a lot, you know he's trying to cover up something." When the coaches are quiet, they're confident about their teams, he said. He also explained his missionary program which allows young men to return from LDS missions with their eligibility intact. He said right now there are 20 players on a mission. The first group of them are due back in January. But, it will take a year and a half before they'll know how productive these young men are. However, he encourages his Mormon players to serve a mission. "What it docs, is give me kids who are 21 years old rather than 18 or 19." have no place to go. And not all colleges place an emphasis on By MELINDA WILLIAMS First round'draft pick Lather Wright and his Utah Jazz teammates completed summer league action Friday by placing third in the Rocky Mountain Revue summer league with a 2 record. Golden State placed first with a 0 mark. In October, Wright and other Revue survivors will report for veterans camp in SL George. He began rebuilding BOUNTIFUL Ron McBride is as intent on making sure his players graduate from college and are prepared for the "real world" as he is on having a winning season. McBride, head football coach for the University of Utah, was the first speaker in the Bountiful Rotary Club's "Impact of Sports in Utah," series, held during the club's weekly luncheon Thursday. About 45 people attended, including several youngsters, anxious to hear about U of U sports. McBride directed much of his speech to those young people, telling them education is an important part of a college football player's life today. He said he was a typical football player when he was in college interested in playing football and having a good time than in studying. And, he said, no coach ever told him the importance of academics. Luckily, he married while in college and his wife started pressing him with the importance of a college education. "I made up my mind when I began coaching, that every kid I worked with was going to get an education," he said. He holds himself to that promise. The U of U football program sees 93 percent of its players graduate and last year, 23 of 23 players graduated. McBride described measures he takes when one of his players is suffering academically. "We bring them in on a Saturday or Sunday or at 5:30 a.m. to study." It's the the program from the bottom up. Now, each summer he takes his team to Price for 10 days training, because he believes exposing the players to a blue-collatmosphere makes them appreciate what they ar have. He spoke of last year's team and the outlook for next year. Of Iasi year's team he admitted by the end of the year, the team was having problems. There was a lack of coach's philosophy that if you place people in an uncomfortable situation (such as getting up early to study) it challenges them and they rise to the occasion. While youngsters dream of being professional football or baseball players, "If you're not drafted in the first five, you have only a two to three percent chance of becoming a professional athlete," he said. He stressed these dismal statistics make it important colleges prepare an athlete for what happens when he's done playing college ball. Without an education, college athletes have a hard time adjusting to real life. consistency. And, "the team got to the point they thought they were pretty good," he said. That's when they started to slide to the bottom. "You have to play your best every week." Speaking of tlte upcoming year, he said the Utcs have a good chance 07 $Qg00 Coach McBride warned that without a college degree, someone else makes decisions about your life for you. "When youre young, it's important to make real good decisions," he said. However, as a football coach he sees young people having more problems than in the past because they lack focus and interest and We tfemce jitaceS $ab vikmce 113 N.
