About 17 residents on the two streets had protested the city's decision to allow the UTA to use their streets as a route to shuttle people back and forth between Lagoon and Councilman FARMINGTON Greg Bells suggestion of laying down in front of the buses to get the Utah Transit Authority to change the route of the Lagoon Trolley proved unnecessary for members of the City Council. Lagoon and UTA officials have agreed to a change of direction, downtown Farmington. Petitioners complained and claimed were safety hazards. The Postal Service had previously removed the project from any post office construction list. When the Layton post office was OKd, the Bountiful site was in real doubt. But both Hatch and Hansen worked to secure Bountiful as another need Trees CONTINUED FROM FRONT walk the area this week to determine what would need to be done, and what the costs would be to replace the poles. I dont have an estimate yet, but I know it will be costly because we will not be able to use the existing wire and it will have to ' ed site. The Postal Service has recognized Bountifuls increasing needs for several years, Hansen said. I congratulate the citizens of Bountiful, Davis County and the rest of those concerned enough not to give up the fight, Hatch added. The need for such a facility is apparent to all concerned. I congratulate the city of Bountiful and thank the U.S. Postal Service. The closing date of the RDA nationwide shake-u- p of the Postal Service was partly responsible for the delays in finalizing the deal with Bountiful officials. Last April the RDA board approved $5,000 and hired Allred, Soffe, Wilkinson and Nichols to provide landscaping architectural services for the design and construction of a fountain near the planned new post office in downtown Bountiful. 1 1 The city claims the entire project property came after nearly months of waiting and negotiations to install the fountain is estimated to between the Postal Service and the cost $30,000 and will enhance the RDA for a new post office. A third alternative, directional pruning, would reshape the trees into what some consider to be ugly configurations. The trees or an would be pruned in a to conform to the existing wires. Forbush said another plan, that of replacing the trees a few at a time over a period of years, has also been suggested. pe Free blue spruce offered Ten free Colorado blue spruce trees will be given to each person who joins The National Arbor Day Foundation during August 1993. The free trees are part of the nonprofit Foundation's Trees for America campaign. "Colorado blue spruces were selected for this campaign because of their many uses in the home landscape," John Rosenow, the Foundation's executive director, said. "They lend beauty to their n surroundings with their silver color and compact conical as shape. They can be used individual ornamental, an energysaving windbreak, a privacy screen, or as living Christmas trees. The trees will be shipped blue-gree- postpaid at the right time for planting between October 15 and December 10 with enclosed planting instructions. They also want the city to investigate possible funding sources to put the power lines underground. Forbush said it would be hard for the residents along State Street to bear the cost of a special improvement district to put the wires underground. I just hope they will all attend the meeting to get the facts before they take any action, he said. The public hearing will be held Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 6 p.m. at Farmington City Hall. The new route calls for the trolley to leave the park and travel north on Lagoon Drive to Burke Lane, head east on Burke to Main Street, and then south on Main (State Road 106) to State Street. The trolley will continue to pick up and deliver passengers at First Security Bank, before heading west on State to Lagoon Drive and back to the park. The advantage of the new route is that the trolley will only make right hand turns and never cross any lanes of oncoming $16,000 to operate the trolley during the summer, half of which is paid by the UTA. Lagoon's share is $6,000, and the city pays $2,000. One concern was whether the city could demand the route be changed when Farmington was the lowest contributor; another was whether the city could legally demand that the route be changed. UTA officials had given the Semadeni route a lukewarm reception when it was proposed before, saying it was a major inconvenience. But after discussing the route change once again with traffic. The agreement lays to rest, at least temporarily, what has been a continuing aggravation to some of Lagoon's neighbors. It also allays city officials fears that some kind of legal action would be necessary to get the route changed. Bell was, of course, not being serious when he proposed laying down in front of the buses at a council meeting last month. He was answering City Manager Max Forbush's plea for a fallback postition in the event UTA officials refused to heed the city's request for them to change the route that some city residents claimed was 10-ye- ar f city officials, UTA agreed to consult with Lagoon. Forbush said Lagoon graciously consented to the city's request. The Lagoon Trolley has been in operation for several years, ever since UTA stopped carrying passengers to and from the park's back entrance on Lagoon Lane.
