Show Friday, February 27, 1981 Sun Advocate, Price, Utah 5 Dinos need playoff win for state berth ByRAYNECARR Sports Writer ST. GEORGE Traveling took its toll on the Carbon hoopster as Dixie gained the division title, Wednesday night. The Carbon cagers now must win a playoff for a spot in next weeks state tournament. At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, the Dinos will face the loser of Fridays Springville Spanish Fork game. Carbon will play at North Sevier High School in Salina. If the Dinos win, they will earn either a second or third place seed into the state tournament. This will be determined by a coin flip between the winning teams. Inconsistent shooting throughout the game spelled the end of any 88-4- 3, Leading scorer for the Dinos was Jenson with 15, the other guard, John Breznick rolled in 7 with forward Steve Burge adding 6. Center Gordon Mathis added 7 with Darin Judd and Troy Moynier adding two and six points respectively. In JV game, the Dinos suffered their first loss to Dixie Leading scorer for the Dinos was David Walton with 16. Duane Vasten and Tony Gianoulis were the only other Dinos in double figures with 14 and 13 respectively. Troy Nichols and Lloyd Jensen pumped in 6 each for the Dino Dino title hopes. Several points were lost by Carbon as buckets popped out and fold shots rolled away. The first three minutes gave every sign of being a classic confrontation between the top two teams in the division. The action became wild as officials lost control of the game as the teams agressiveness took over. The Dinos, led by guard Bent Jenson, restrained from the brutal play making of Dixie, only to suffer the most damage. The Flyers, meanwhile played their best game of the season. In the final minutes of play, the Flyers inserted their substitutes freely for the first time in the game. 73-5-5. final. The key play in the game, was the confrontation between the Dinos bench and officials. Strange technicals for player - coach discussions on the bench, set the supporters of CHS on edge. The sophomores ended their season on a low note as they lost Steve Dennison put in 20 points in the Dino cause. The Dinos will now head for the playoffs with Springville and Spanish Fork Friday and Saturday for a state tournament berth. State action begins on Monday, March 2, at the University of Utah. 61-3- 3.
