Show 8B Sun Advocate, Price, Utah Wednesday, October 1, 1980 Time for furniture winterizing You may not want to admit it, but summer is over. Soon it will be time for raking leaves and winterizing your outdoor furniture. The leaves you can compost or throw away, but you hope you can save the furniture for summers to come. The frost will be on the pumpkin and the rust will be on the lawn furniture if you dont act soon. Starting now has two advantages, according to Marilyn Noyes, extension home management special ist at Utah State University. First, the cleaning chemicals you may use on your furniture are safer if they are used outdoors where there is plenty of ventilation. Second, if you find a part or piece of fur- niture that needs replacing, the fall is one of the best times to take advantage of outdoor furniture sales. Most outdoor furniture is constructed of aluminum, which tends to grey and accumulate dirt. To his family, he is affectionately Fellow ranchers call him Budge. Green River residents call him a legend. Ray Budge Wilcox is the head of a family that has made ranching its living and its way of life for more than fifty years. Jeannette Fidell Wilcox, his daughter-in-lashares the Wilcox family ranching story. Its hard to say when the ranching story of this family really began. But, I think a good place to start is with the McPherson Ranch. In 1980, Jim McPherson took up ranching on the Florence Creek Place in Desolation Canyon. Jim and Mother Mac raised five children lone, Fern, Pearl, Zelpha and Jim. Budge Wilcox married Pearl McPherson. Jim McPherson, Budges father-in-laoften befriended Butch Cassidys Wild Bunch. In fact, old Jim used to say The outlaws were generally a lot nicer folks than the posse was. Eventually, Budge and Pearl bought the McPherson Ranch. They sold it in the 1940s to be added to the Ute Indian Reservation. Unlike the glitter of televisions cowboys, making ranching a profitable business venture became more and more difficult. Twenty - five years ago, Budge and Pearl Wilcox along with their sons Don and Waldo and their respective families, went into the dude ranch business. Mrs. Wilcox explains. Finally, we had to do something to subsidize the cows. We decided that there must be some people who would be willing to pay for the deer hunt on our property. Ill never forget when we picked up our mail at the Dragerton Post Office. There was a whole bundle of mail waiting and there were deposits from all over the United States, he said. Since then, the three Wilcox families have expanded their individual dude ranch businesses to include several different types of trips that include time on the Tavaputs Ranch as well as transportation to Sand Wash to participate in river trips. The guest book of Tavaputs Ranch includes guests from all over the world and it is not unusual to find complimentary messages written in French, German or other foreign languages. Whether the message is a loving friendship quote or a humorous picture describing sheer exhaustion on the dude ranch, all carry the same thoughts good food, wonderful warm people, hospitality. Local KSL television personality Paul James explained the only real hazard of the Gaining 10 pounds in 3 days place The Tavaputs Ranch specializes in good food homegrown beef, homemade bread, fried potatoes and lots of it. And though a ranch cookbook is still in the planning stages, guests have already given orders and deposits for a cookbook with recipes from the Tavaputs Ranch. True to western legends, Budge Wilcox is a tough, old cowboy. He has personally survived many accidents in his ranching career including a plane crash and a broken neck when he crawled for help on his elbows. Budge Wilcoxs story is not over by a long shot. He and his wife Pearl have passed on a love of ranching that is today evident in not only their two sons, but also their grandsons who want to make it their way of life, too. Despite the Wilcox dude ranch success story, life on the ranch also had its moments of hard work and loneliness. Jeannette Wilcox explains her first years with Budge and the family. Ill never forget my attempt to impress my future father-in-laand husband. I flanked cows and I was black and blue from my neck to my ankles. I did impress them, I guess. The first year we were married we were snowed in at our little ranch cabin for months. Not accustomed to the way of life I practically got sick from moping around. My husband, Don, finally told Pa that he had to get me out for for a visit to the old country (Spring Glen). Well, the snow was up to the horses bellies and it took us eight hours to get out. I stayed with my family several weeks and when I went back, Pa met me to take me home. The snow was the same, but it only took Pa 4 and one half hours. Mrs. Wilcox tells the story about her father. Most of all, Pa is a good father. Ill never forget how Pa praised the first homemade bread I made for him. Pa even bragged about my bread to Pearl. It was only later that I learned, and not from Pa, that you have to let bread rise first!
