Show Sun Advocate, Price, Utah 4 Wednesday, May 30, 1979 Bowling tournament Castle Valley takes first A team from the HELPER formed Castle Valley newly Junior Bowling Assn, has placed first in the 13th Amateur Utah Junior Bowling Tournament in Orem. That was announced Saturday night at the associations awards banquet at the LaSalle dining room. Trophies and certificates were presented to top bowlers in the associations two divisions, the Bantams and Juniors. The top state A & B Bantam division handicap team, called the Bouncing Bowlers, consists of Brett Bianco, Brian Noel, Michelle Johnston, Marianne Rolando and Chris Wahl. They rolled a 3,200 with handicap, May 5, at Maple Lanes for the title. Other state awards in the Bantam division went to Brett Bianco,, first place all events trophy and second place handicap singles in division A handicap; Brian Noel, first place trophy, all events, division B; Marianne Rolando, third place trophy handicap singles, division B; and Chris Wahl, 10th place all events, division B. The junior division B Pin Dusters team of Helper won third place at state. Team members are Edward Nielson, David Johnson, Lisa Hamilton, David Dimick and Gary Lipscomb. CEU picks outstanding 2 athletes of the year Theresa a Versluis, all - conference volleyball player from Kearns High, and Ken Young, a freshman from Jordan High who last week sophomore finished seventh in the nation in the decathalon event, were honored as College of Eastern Utahs Outstanding Athletes of the Year. Theresa is a sophomore business major who was named Keams High Most Outstanding Athlete in 1977 and ICAC all conference volleyball player fall quarter. Her other achievements at CEU include being a starter on the volleyball, basketball, and softball teams both years and being named team captain on each of those teams her sophomore year. She was also given an award for Outstanding CEU volleyball player by Coach Kendra Tomsic. Ken hails from Sandy, Utah where he graduated from high school in 1976. After serving a two year mission for the LDS Church he started CEU in 1978. Early in the track and field season he qualified for the decathalon nationals and recently returned with a seventh place finish and a tally of 6,499 points. He was also named Outstanding CEU track athlete by Coach Ray Barrus. Other women athletes receiving awards included Kathy Howa,! a freshman from Hillcrest, named Outstanding Basketball Player. She was named to the ICAC all conference basketball squad this past season. Barbie Layton, a freshman physical education major from Moab was named outstanding softball player while Angie Pierce, a sophomore physical education major from Salina was named outstanding gymnast of -- -- -- the year. Susan Zwahlen, a sophomore general education major from Price was named Ideal Blue Debutante. She served as president of the precision drill dance team this past season. Men athletes receiving awards included Rick Bakker and George Minick, tying for outstanding basketball player awards. Bakker is a sophomore business major from Jordan High who received first team all - conference honors and all - region honors this past season. A starter both his freshman and sophomore years for Coach Curt Jenson, Bakker averaged 18.6 points per game while pulling down 236 rebounds or 9.8 per game. A two sport athlete, Bakker also excelled on the track team where he placed second in the Utah State Junior College Track and Field Championship in the discus with a throw of 113 Vz" and fifth in the shotput with a 37 1 throw. Minick is a sophomore from Washington, D.C., who last season was awarded the OuBasketball Player tstanding Award and best all - around athlete. This year he was given an honorable mention in the final -- ICAC statistics. He In league play, league chamwere pions in the Bantam division Mutual Furniture. Members are Marianne Rolando, Brian Noel, Paula Swisher, Louis Alire and Michael Dimick. Brett Bianco with a 113 and Laura Davis with 84 earned a patch and trophy for having the highest average in the Bantam division. Other Bantam winners were Brian Noel with a 389 and Marianne Rolando with a 333 scratch and Brian Noel with 530 and Tonya Marshall with 542 handicap, all for high league series. Posting high games were Chris Wahl with a 145, Paula Swisher with a 139 and a 204 and Dwayne Baughman with 200. The Most Improved Average award went to Chris Wahl with 22 pins and Stacy Turner with 27 pins. Receiving for certificates placing last is the Blue Water Marina team of Brett Bianco, Dwayne Baughman, Stacy Turner and Darren Montez. Perfect attendance pins went to Brett Bianco, Chris Wahl and Marianne Rolando. Achievement certificates went to Louie Alire, Michael Dimick, Paige Lamph, Kelly Fossat, Jimae Ritter, Terry Saccomano, Jody Dimick. Michelle Johnston Louis Wahl Jr., Julie Regis and Posting league high averages were David Dimick with 123 and Marie Johnston with 97. Winning high series were Edward Neilsen with a 445 and 622 and Kelly Blackham with 343 and 589. High game honors went to Jerry Mooney with 155, Lisa Hamilton with 167 and 236 and Alan Kirkwood with 239. David Dimick with 17 pins and Kelly Blackham with 21 pins won an award for the Most Improved Darren Montez. In the junior division, league champion was the Helper Mercantile team of Edward Nielsen, Alan Kirkwood, Jerry Mooney and Richard Dimick. present. Average. The association was formed by Robert Lipscomb, new manager of the Bonnie Lanes in Helper.
