Spring Glen buildings listed as historic sites The Utah Historic Sites Review Committee listed two Spring Glen buildings on the state register of historic places last week, according to Nancy Taniguchi, regional director of the state historic perservation program. Both the Topolovec Farm and the Dupin Mercantile Store landmarks are on Spring Glens Main Street. The Topolovec farm, having been an important part in all phases of development of the region, has also been recommended by the review committee for possible national designation, Taniguchi said. The state review committee is an arm of the Utah Historical Society. The farm site was originally settled by Spring Glens first Mormon bishop, Heber Stowell, in 1894. Later the Bishop organized the Spring Glen Canal Company and constructed a sawmill which supplied the rest of the town with lumber, Taniguchi said. By the early 1900s the farm had become a major social center where the bishop built a dance pavilion, and the sawmill pond was used for boating during the summer and skating in the winter. All that remains of this early year is the Slowed Ditch (part of the canal company) and the mill pond, most recently used for ducks, she said. The bishop did not prosper in Spring Glen and sold out to Frank Jerome of Helper in 1906. Jerome, a Helper saloon owner, represented the regions second phase in serving the train crews and miners who pioneered Carbon Countys industrial base. During this period Spring Glen became over shadowed by Helper when the Denver & Rio Grande decided to locate their helper locomotives there to aid trains going over Soldier Summit, she said. Jerome built the home in 1913 which is included in the farms historic designation. The farms sawmill pond, the irrigation ditches, a barn, house behind the 1913 house are also in included the historic designation, she said. Jerome remarried after his first wifes death, his second When two Slovene immigrants, Anton Juvan. and John Dupin Three years later an adjacent store burned down and the mercantile business moved into the stone building, she said. The Topolovecs, after purchasing the land in 1922, developed the propertys farming capabilities by selling produce to the surrounding coal camps. Topolovecs youngest son, Sylvester, shares ownership of the house with his father. The son intends to eventually restore the home to its original appearance by rebuilding the front porch, Taniguchi said. The historical designation not only provides some recognition to the Topolovecs, but it provides some tax incentives for re furnishing the structure to its original appearance, she said. Taniguchi recommended the Dupin building to the state review committee because it represents the immigrant development of the region, she said. In 1916 the building opened as the Europe Europe Saloon by -- the strike which you dont keep an eye on your figure neither cemented friendships, she said.
