Show VOLUME 61, NUMBER 28 SALINA, UTAH, THURSDAY, JULY 14, PRICE 1983 25c Mosquito Spraying Held Op For Chemical Study Sevier Countys mosquito abatement program was put on hold for 48 hours Monday while commissioners checked with experts on the safety of the chemical Malathion that was being used to get rid of the pesky insects. Commissioner Elmo Herring said about 15 citizens came to the Sevier Commission County meeting Monday and requested the county the chemical, stop spraying claiming it posed a health hazard to humans, especially to pregnant women and die elderly. Herring said the commission agreed to stop spraying for two days while Earl Slack, county pest control officer, investigates their claims. Up until Mondays meeting, the reaction from Sevier County citizens had been positive to the mosquito spraying program, said Herring. I sure felt we were on the right track, said Herring. And I still do. He said Malathion has been used safely for 35 years. The spraying program began after stacks of petitions were submitted to commissioners requesting they take steps to bring the mosquito problem under control. Record flooding had heightened the already-prese- nt mosquito problem. Saturday, July 23, is the big day for activities beginning at 6 a.m. f Canyon Fall Injures Missionary By Dave Noyce Staff Writer An LDS missionary MONRQE fell about 25 feet while hiking on a mountain east of Monrovian Park and was Tuesday afternoon stranded there for over four hours before rescuers could reach him and transport him by helicopter to Sevier Valley Hospital in Richfield. Elder James Derick Brammer, 21, Portland, Ore., who is serving in the Salina area, is in stable condition with a fractured right arm and a chipped bone in his right ankle. He said he expects to be released Thursday. Brammer was hiking with his companion, Elder Charles Wallace Dudley, Alberta, Canada, and two missionaries from Richfield when he fell near the top of the mountain at about 1:45 p.m. Brammer was in pain and could not make the climb, down the mountain so Dudley and one of the Richfield missionaries went far help. The Sevier County Sheriffs Office, Richfield Ambulance, EMTs and 13 members of the Jeep Posse responded. FEMA Flood Briefing Meet Reset for Thursday Night Workout Time Officials of Federal Emergency (FEMA) Management Agency cancelled last weeks briefing for individuals who want to consider claims fa flood damage assistance, and rescheduled it for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. For NSHS Gridironers Officials said the meeting will be held in the Sevier County Courthouse basement auditorium. At the briefing, it will be explained what damages are eligible for assistance, including loans, grants and other help from federal and state governments. Last weeks briefing was can ' celled at 4 p.m., three hours before it was to be held. Sevier County emergency management director Jim Porter said officials called and stated the pilot who was to bring the group here refused to land in Richfield because of high winds. Porter suggested they drive from Provo, as there was still plenty of time, but EMA officials said they would cancell the meeting and reschedule it. Some 50 persons came for the meeting, who had not been informed otherwise. Several others had received the word through phone calls and radio announcements. A Jeep Posse Commander Jim Porter said it took nearly two hours far the first rescue team member to reach the injurred missionary. A helicopter was called in from Wayne County to aid in the rescue. The chopper could not land safely where the missionary was and so landed about halfway down the mountain. The helicopter was able to lower supplies on a tether to the rescue team.
