Fire Season Upon Us (Note: The following editorial was written by Lloyd Mullican originally for his Spotlight Column. The editor was so impressed with the logic and ideas expressed, that he asked Mr. Mullicans permission to use the piece as the staff editorial. We are grateful to Mr. Mullican for Our recent flood waters have receded arid the danger seems to be over, but now there is another very real danger facing us fire. The weather is getting hotter and the grass and range brush is getting very dry. Every year we lose thousands of acres of forest and range land to fire. Fire that is mostly due to carelessness by human beings. A cigarette tossed from a passing car, a campfire not completely put out or a child playing with matches. Some are deliberately set and a lot of personal property is lost besides our natural resources. This can be prevented but it has to be prevented by people. Animals dont carry matches or start fires, people do. At this are being sold and explodtime of year, when ed, is an especially critical time. If you allow your child to have fireworks, be sure that an adult is there to supervise. A child has an inventive mind and sometimes, without meaning to, they are careless. This could mean you lose your property to fire or a serious grass fire could be started. Even without matches in the hands of a child can be ' dangerous. We have some excellent firefighters, but they have a big enough job fighting fires caused by lightning in the summer and over heated stoves in the winter. Lets not add to their problems by being careless. Many of us enjoy camping and sitting around a campfire, but for us and future generations, if we dont take care of our camping areas, they may not be there for anyone to enjoy. All it takes is common sense and care. If there is no fire-p- it where you camp, dig one. Always keep an eye on your fire, especially if the wind is blowing. When you go to bed or leave the campsite, douse the fire with sand or water. The cause and prevention of needless fires lies squarely on all our shoulders, so lets all do our part and see that there is something left for our future generations to enjoy and admire. A blackened wasteland is not very enjoyable or admirable. ks fire-work- s, Young Adult Calendar This week on the calendar for the Salina IDS Stake Young Adults, they have scheduled a trip to Lagoon. It did lack one thing, however, which is no fault of the Heres Why No Band for Parade JUST STUFF BY Editor, Sun: I would like to publicly apologize to the community for not having a band in the parade on the 4th. I know a parade is not complete without a band and I feel a great sense of responsibility to the community I have grown to love so much over the past six years, to provide the one thing they enjoy most in a parade, a band. For all that you people have done for me, I am sincerely sorry for not pulling through for you. I had promised Mr. Robinson, Mr. Learning and Mr. Poulson in May of this year that I would have a band and I did everything I could to keep that promise. It is impossible to march with 12 kids, seven of which have never marched before and one drummer to provide a cadence for the entire parade. It would have been a humiliating experience to those who did want to march. To those who did make the effort to put the marching band as a priority in their busy summer schedule, drum major Matt Butt, who came every night, Geoff Anderson, Kathy Glover, Christine and Stephanie Christensen, Sherri Anderson, Lorie Taylor, Brent Hales, Angie JflN The smell of gun powder has cleared from the air. All traces of,, candy wrappers, firecrackers and meadow muffins, left over from the parade, are gone. And the park, as is the case every year, is restored to its pristine beauty. The last float has passed; the last firecracker popped; . the last booth has been taken down and put away for another year. Old no longer waves on main-stree- t, Glory and the sound of crickets fill BOOMS the air instead of the KA of the fire crackers. Fourth of July has come and gone. Hopefully people carry a little of the fourth around in their heart all year. Its that lump in your throat you get when you hear the Pledge The . of Allegience or the chill you should feel when you see the flag pass. Its that silent hush that fills the stadium as the first notes of The Star Spangled Banner are played. Its that irresistable urge to jump up and march when a rousing Sousa march is played. back on my growing up realize just how lucky I and years am to have grown up in a community that celebrates the Fourth where theres a the way we do celebration for the kids and grown ups alike, a place where the Fourth of July is still a big deal. That little bit of Fourth caught in my heart from days gone by is the reason I get a lump in my throat when I say Im proud to be an American! I look Mason, Debra Bennett, Denise Roberts, Cami Wilkins, Jennifer Sorensen, and Rochelle Camp, thank you. For the other 75 who could have marched, I hope you will assume some personal responsibility and get behind your new band director for next year. Give this community the one thing they want and deserve on Independence Day, a BAND in the parade. We have also lately heard much about the mosquitoes and insects that will trouble us through the rest of the season. Perhaps now is the time to combine our concerns and clean up the areas where the mosquitos and gnats hide during the heat of the day. Simply spraying, while it will helty is not going to solve the problem. The spray will not penetrate dense weed patches and the annoyance will continue. If everyone who has signed the petition would put their money or labor where their pen is then this . problem would be well on the way .- , to being solved. Cmon everyone, quit complaining and lets do something about the weeds and the mosquitoes. Sincerely, Frank Crowe, Aurora HAS MOVED!
