Speer, Editor Teresa Thompson, Office Manager Vicki Nielsen, Advertising Manager Salina by Jan City Pride Starts With Community Effort I have come to the conclusion that anyone who can make it through general registration for college has it made in the shade when it comes to classes and homework. Utah State has its City pride begins with Downtown pride. Andersons Food Center has the right idea. They have the spirit of community pride which seems to be lacking in our potentially beautiful town. The other day King Anderson was seen on a ladder painting their faded sign on the front of their store a bright cheerful red. It livened up the whole side of the street. A jaunt down and up the business district reveals a sore need for the same kind of diligence not only by merchants, but by the entire community. It is not fair to blame merchants for the filthy condition of the gutters, nor can businessmen alone be required to repaint buildings and murals with which they have nothing to do. The city itself should be the one to clean the empty beer bottles, paper and muck out of the gutters. The city, however, is strapped for finances and cannot take the full load of cleaning and beautifying the downtown area. The Sun believes the majority of the load should be born by the people of Salina as represented by the community clubs and to the Senior Citizens, from Jaycees organizations from the to Lions Club. President Reagan made it abundantly clear in his most recent economics speech that volunteerism must make a comeback in P-T- A America. Merchants can help by not sweeping their trash or cleaning their brooms in the city gutters as was observed just this week. They can paint where needed and fix where appropriate. Jaycees and other community groups can help by appointing a chairman in charge of Community Beautification and launch a program designed to make Salina the envy of all small Utah registration worked out so that if you are attending school you can Theres no hassle, no lines, no confusion. You fill out the schedule you want, they run it through the compre-regist- puter and shazam! Youre registered. But, if you happen to miss this as I did, you get to register after everyone else at general registration, and its a mess! First you must have your packet, which is made up for you when you are admitted to the school. Sounds easy? Well, these packets are hidden in different places on campus . . . yours might be in the admissions office, the registrars office, any office in Old Main, or in the records office, your councilors office, the Bureau of Students office, the affairs office or any other little node or cranny they could think of to poke it. And its your Mission job to find it impossible right off the bat. towns. The city can help by approaching the problem in city council and by doing what it can to clean those gutters. Residents can help by making sure their own yards and homes When you finally run are not offensive in any way. down your packet you We commend those downtown merchants and those residents in make out a tentative the city who keep their businesses and homes as beautiful as their class schedule, listing talents and finances will allow them. One of my goals is to get the community involved with the high school. One. of the best ways is through the PTSA, Smith said. Mail will be received for dispatch on Saturdays only until 12 noon beginning Oct. 3. Mail will be received until 4:30 p.m. Monday through FYiday, with doors being closed from 11 a.m. to noon. Never use a gun unless you are sure of your target. Deadly force must be used only to prevent bodily harm, not just to protect property.
