Show Fire Prevention Week Focuses On Home Safety Homes usually are the scene of happiness and security. But fire prevention officials say homes all too often are turned into scenes of tragedy and death. Three out of four fire deaths occurred at home last year, according to the National Fire Prevention Assn. Nearly 10,000 Americans died in fires during 1977, and an estimated 7,800, or 78 percent, of these deaths occurred in homes. Fire Prevention Week this year is Oct. 8 - 14. This is an ideal time, suggests the Insurance Information Institute, to take precautionary steps by eliminating residential fire hazards and devising a family escape plan. The Institute offers families the following suggestions, any one of which may help save lives or property. -- Have a family escape plan which includes a d meeting place outside the house. Many parents have died in fires as a result of rushing back into a fire after a missing child. The child, in the meantime, may have been safely outdoors on the other side of the house. -Nearly half of all residential fires begin as a result of cooking accidents. Grease should always be cleaned from the range. Curtains should not be near enough to the range to blow into or near the flames. Dishcloths, potholders and other flammable materials should not be placed carelessly near a flame. -- Defective electrical wiring and appliances account for 38 percent of residential fires. Installing or extending home wiring is not a job. Call in a qualified electrician. a door or window slightly open when using a portable gas or oil heater. This allows the oxygen it uses to be replaced. Do not leave the -- Leave heater burning during the night. -- Have an experienced serviceman go over your central dont heating system now wait for cold weather. He should also inspect and clean flue pipes and chimneys to make necessary repairs. -- Do not clean clothing with benzine or gasoline. Its better to spend a little money at the local cleaner than risk losing your home in a fire. -- Never use kerosene or other flammable liquids to start a fire in a furnace, fireplace, or wood burning stove. -- Do not use your basement, closets and attic as a storage spot for newspapers, old furniture and other trash which may easily catch fire. - Visitors To Bryce Canyon On Increase Visitation to Bryce Canyon Park in September National totaled 100,354, a 10 percent increase over last year. During the first nine months of 1978, visitation is up 12 percent with a total of 614,500 visitors entering the park. The park Visitor Center is now open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. North Campground and all park roads and viewpoints will remain open until the first heavy snowfall. The Bryce Canyon Lodge closed Oct. 1. The park is closed to hunting. Possession of firearms in the park is prohibited. The park boundary is well marked, but anyone planning to hunt in areas adjacent to the park should stop at the park visitor center if they have any questions on park regulations. Milk Production 78,000 milk cows produced 84 million pounds of milk during August, according to the Utah Crop and Livestock Reporting Service. Frank O. Nishiguchi, president of the Utah Farm Bureau Federation, has told Regional Forester Vern Hamre of Ogden, in a letter commenting on the current RARE II program of the U.S. Forest Service, that: We believe the of national establishment values as superior to a local or statewide judgement, in a policy matter such as land use, is indefensible." Nishiguchi quoted Farm Bureau policy, set by the farmers of Utah and the nation, which says: Experience has shown that the concept applied to certain areas under the Wilderness Act has resulted in the serious degradation of the resource. He added that the current data to be used in national decisions about adding wilderness area to the present 16.6 million acres in wilderness management have several weaknesses. They fail to recognize econimic and other benefits from livestock grazing that accrue to the general public and the losses that will follow reduced livestock grazing. The Forest Service studies have also failed to identify data showing the adverse watershed impacts produced by wilderness management, the farm leader said. Unique land values can be preserved without wilderness designation, Nishiguchis letter explained. Existing laws have protective authority. Farm Bureau members, who include about 80 percent of Utahs farmers and ranchers, are expressing increased resentment of outside influences as areas continue to be considered for wilderness in opposition to local recommendations, Nishiguchi said. He pointed out that the draft environmental statement on the ol dleton, Richfield District Manager of the Bureau of Land Management. Escatech, a private company based at Anchorage, Alaska, has been contracted for the survey by BLM to provide basic data for a soils and vegetation inventory to be completed in multiple use management, stating that In multiple use, there would be something for everyone. The current proposals, if adopted, would add millions of acres of lower Forest Service land with high value for grazing, mining and other uses. the fall of 1979. BLM Soils scientists James Buchanan and Weston Warren are coordinating vegetative types with soils survey types identified by Escatech for an of range sites. Mountain Water u Untreated mountain water source of giardiasis, is a protozoal infection of the small bowel, which has been steadily increasing over the past four years, according to the Utah State Division of Health. Symptoms are diarrhea, cramps, bloating, fatigue and weight loss. High risk individuals are campers, backpackers, hunters and cross country skiers who have consumed or been exposed to untreated mountain water. The Bureau of Disease Prevention recommended that all mountain water be considered as contaminated and not be consumed without treatment. The causative organism, (iiardia lamblia, is resistant to chlorination, so water should be boiled anywhere from one to ten minutes or treated with iodine compounds. Iodine tablets or 2 percent iodine tincture are handy and easily obtainable. Ilalazone tablets rely upon the effects of chlorine and are not recommended.
