Two brothers, Peter and Neils C. Rasmussen, and a friend, Peter Sorensen, made their way south from Moroni. These brave men came with few supplies and tools. They made their camp near the creek, and at once started to make a shanty to protect them from the approaching winter. From that time on, new settlers arrived and found that living did not come easy in Salina. That same month, a meeting house was started. Wiliam McFayden, Elijah Barney Ward, and James C. Anderson soon followed the Rasmussen brothers and Mr. Sorensen to Salina. Elijah Barney Ward and James C. Anderson were the first to lead a group of men into the mountains for timber. This timber was used to build the, first bridge across Salina Creek. They made the first poles for fences and stockyards. Both of these men served on Salinas first militia. William McFaydens wife was the first white woman to come to the Salina settlement. These early pioneers made their homes in the banks of the Salina Creek, and they also dug holes in the ground. These dugouts were covered with willow roofs combined with mud. Some were lined with rocks and the cooking was done on an open fireplace built at one end, the chimney sticking out of the ground. Fireplaces were put near the entrance of the dugout. Additions for these dugouts were of necessity. Such things as cupboards, shelves, stoves, beds, were found in almost all dugouts at that time. Their cupboards were made from boxes with wood shelves inserted in them. The more o of the pioneers had cupboards of this sort. These pioneers had few cooking utensils and very few dishes. They used wooden bowls, wooden spoons, and tin dishes. An interesting story tells of newlyweds paying one dollar a piece for dinner plates. Neils C. Rasmussen was the first man to build a rock house. This was located near the creek. Henry McKenna built a Salina. An attempt to irrigate the north side of the creek was unsuccessful. They were forced to plant on the south side of the creek. The first year of planting proved to be quite successful.
