Show Tuesday, October 27, 1998 Lakeside Review Sunday, October 25, 1 998 Davis Standard 5 Farmington City Council irons out details on new LDS church building wants to Council look building pleasing to motorists By RUTH MALAN Standard-Examine- r correspondent FARMINGTON - It will be designed with Farmington rock, but it won t be facing the way some city council members want it to. The city council this week met with members of the LDS Church Architectural Department to iron out questions surrounding the building of an LDS chapel at Oakride Park Drive and 1075 West. want to put rock on the building. In September, the planning commission approved a conditional use permit with no Farmington rock on the church buildmg itself but in the landscaping and at the entrance to the church property. On Oct. 7 during a regular city council meeting the council appealed the planning commission decision because the buildmg did not have Farmington rock Joe Rose of the LDS Church Architectural Department displayed a sample of the Canyon Rose brick to be used on the church. They have agreed to put some rock on the lower part of the walls on the east and west sides of the building, but there will be some precast facings on the building to help with the mix of rock and brick. in its design. Church architects do not like the look of rock and bnck together, so did not The church will be located on the north end of town where it can be seen by southbound motorists. Councilman Dave Connors is concerned all the mo torists will see is the back side of the building from U.S. 89 and Cherry Hill Campground. For the aesthetic point of view, it would make a better statement, facing north, said Mayor Greg Bell. Connors agreed and asked if the building could be located differently on the site. But according to Rose, the boulders in the landscaping will be 3 feet to 5 feet in diameter on a rise, and there will be trees that will hide the north side of the building. The bidding for the building will take place in November, with the construc- tion planned to begin the first of the year. The city will need to acquire additional property from the LDS Church in order to construct the 1075 West Street ex- tension toward the north. This requirement has been made by UDOT to push the right of way to the west. The city has entered into an agreement with the LDS Church and other developers in the area to acquire the open space. isiLiEcnnicrMsr (DdDiQKrmr 3LSS jp.itnn.
