Show Lakeside Lakeside Review Saturday. July 1 8, 1 998 3 South Weber gives quarterly fire report By LORI J. NAKAYU Standard-Examin- correspondent - SOUTH WEBER - In his quarterly report to the South Weber city council, Fire Chief Wim Pluim said that between April and June of 1997 the South Weber Fire Department responded to 24 alarms. Of the 24 calls there were 13 medical calls, three structure fires, one vehicle fire, one brush fire, three false alarms, one rubbish fire and two miscellaneous calls classified as dangerous situations. Pluim also said that the overall re- sponse time for the South Weber Fire Department is about six minutes, which is a pretty good time. percent of our calls are responded to in five minutes, Pluim said. Almost 16 percent are in four minutes. Twenty-si- x The report showed 6 percent being responded to within two to three minutes for a total of 48 percent of the calls with a response time of five minutes or less. Pluim also provided a breakdown of the time of day each call came in. Two oclock and three oclock in the afternoon are when most of our calls, 26 percent, come in. our alarms are medical. And once the ambulance starts up we will probably get even more. Council member Jack Frost said, When asked when South Weber EMTs will start running the ambulance out of South Weber, Pluim said, It all depends on when the sheriffs department is comfortable with what we are doing and when we are comfortable with what we are doing. Probably the end of this month. This is an excellent report, as always. Chief Pluim. It would be interesting when we can have the ambulance statistics in there and see how that is going to work out. Pluim said he could show how South Webers residents medical needs have changed over the years. Back in the 1980s when I was first fire chief, probably 10 to 20 percent of our alarms were medical. Now were talking 60, 70, sometimes 80 percent of Under a new agreement with the Davis County Sheriff's Office, an ambulance would be housed at South Webers Fire Station and manned by two of South Webers own Emergency Medical Technicians. Pluim also said the fire department had received some matching funds from the Forest Service for some breathing apparatus, and he showed the council members the differ Training program accepting registration OGDEN The National Academy for Quid Development Inc. is accepting registra- approach to enhancing the development and function of children and adults, said Robert J. The National Association for Child Development has, over its 20 years of existence, developed a unique and effective view and Artist Carlos said when she saw the drawing she was speechless. Her husband, Don Carlos, cried. They received permission from Keaton to make copies for their four daughters and other close family members. Carlos even has a copy hanging in her office. er she starts crying, a and friend comes in and holds her. She points to the picture and says, Marsha, look at the picture. Just look at the picture. She accepts commission work from people of all faiths. Carlos said Keatons portrait of her son is perfect. The eyebrows are perfect. The cleft in his chin is perfect Even his hair is perfect. His fingers, his long fingers, are just perfect, she said. The impact the sketch made on the Carlos family launched a side part of Keatons business. Pencil Impressions. Her pencil drawings of children playing with the savior have become a hit locally and are sold in stores throughout the area. Keaton said the model she used for the savior is her friend, JC Robinson in Roy. I picked him because of a certain look in his eyes. He has soft eyes. Its easy to change a nose, a chin or add a beard, but the look in the eyes has to be real. Its not something 1 can create, Keaton said. Keaton spent many hours taking photos of Robinson playing with his and her children. I know he docs, she said. When the first three sketches came out on the market several years ago, one woman liked Keatons drawing of Christ playing with a baby and commissioned Keaton to do one of her own baby with Christ. Others also called and wanted Keaton to sketch their children. Keaton did some commission work at first, but was not pleased with it. I was losing my feeling for it. I was burned out after a few drawings. 1 was afraid it would be reflected in my sketches, Keaton said. Keaton felt strongly the pictures she sketched for commission had to be for special situations. The first special situation came when Allen called her. Allen brought Keaton photos of Cade Carlos so the artist could see what he looked like. She also spent some time talking with Allen to get a feeling about what Allen wanted the picture to say. With the Forest Service matching the funding up to $3,500 and getting $2,000 back for turning in four packs, the city is able to buy four packs instead of just two and still come in several hundred dollars under the budgeted amount of $4,000. - We figured that the only way for the fire department to get ahead is to make the best use of the money the state has. We try to pick up as many grants as we can to help augment the budget for the hundred dollars is nothcity. Thirty-fiv- e ing to sneeze at, said Pluim. Schofield said it would probably take about $3 million to $4 million to bring the road up to present standards. Dickamore said that South Weber Drive had inadequate shoulders, culverts, poor road surface, too many curves (which were mostly in Weber Countys Dickamore also explained the state gasoline tax is divided between the state (which keeps 75 percent) and cities and counties (which get the remaining 25 percent) based on road mileage and condition and type of road. If the state is only going to maintain federal highways, then we should pick up most of the state gas tax and let the state maintain federal roads with a portion of the federal gas tax, said Dickamore. Of course, that would never happen, though. SERVICE IS OUR MIDDLE NAM ERVICE IS OUR' CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING EVAPORATIVE died. It was a little thing, but one they appreciated, Keaton said. Most of the time she hears about the comfort the families have received from her sketches. It has created a bond between her and them. Knowing the sketches are easing their grief is the reason why Keaton continues to accept commission work. Currently, she is working on another sketch to add to her collection that is on the market. The final sketch helped the Carlos family know Cade was happy and everything was OK. You really dont want them to be there, if you had your choice. But we know hes happy. It comes across so forcefully in the picture, Carlos said. Keaton said most of those who commission her to do a sketch hear about her from a friend or hear her speak at an LDS church function. My husband tells me I can say no, but I cant. I just cant when they come to me with tears in their eyes and ask me, Keaton said. Keaton believes her love for the art is a gift and that gift is to be used to help others. She said the sure way to know if a talent is a gift is when you even surprise yourself. Keaton has 20 back orders of people who want her to do a drawing of Christ welcoming a loved one home. Since Keaton has done Cade Carlos sketch, she has done almost a dozen sketches of the savior welcoming loved ones. Her subjects are not all teenagers, but range in age from an infant who lived just a few short hours to an elderly woman. The photos she worked with for the infant did not show him with his parents. Keaton said when she did it she got a feeling that she should draw the infant's fingers curled around one of the saviors, like her children used to do with her. When the parents saw it they were amazed. She said her husband never let go of his tiny hand from the moment he was bom until he and says, Marsha, look at the picture. Just look at f L Her first four drawings in the scries are of the savior cuddling an infant, another with him tickling a couple of boys, one of him holding a baby in the air and of the savior holding one in his arms and the other peering over his shoulder. Her recent sketches on the market are of teenagers ly Consultants are individuals trained to use the neurodevelopmental approach and are qualified to evaluate clients using NACDs neurodevelopmental evaluation model. The new ones meet National Fire Protection Association standards, tells the pressure, how much air is left, how fast youve been breathing and how many minutes of air are left. You can talk through this new mask and you can understand whats being said because it has a voice diaphragm in it, said Pluim.
