Show 2 Lakeside Saturday, July 18, 1998 Lakeside Review Planners recommend car wash in Layton Is that your right or my right? LAYTON - Finding out more about the neighborhood-friendl- y features proposed for a car wash on north Main Street may have convinced the city to allow it. The planning commission has recommended that the city allow developers or project owners to apply for a conditional-use permit to build a car wash in front of Hidden Cove Apartments at 2075 N. Main St. A previous agreement with Bach Development stated that the site must not be a source of noise pollution or excess light strucy and must be a thought it would be developed as neighborhood offices or a restaurant and were concerned that a car wash would be a detriment. Owners said the planned car wash would offer vacuums and doors and agreed to whatever mitigation was necessary to please area neighbors -including closing overnight and adding landscaping. low-noi- Planners agreed that, with certain restrictions and condi- ar- tions met, the car wash could be made to meet zone requirements. originally The council will consider the issue at an upcoming meeting. one-stor- ture matching surrounding chitecture. Lola claims their theme song 7 Z. is We are Sowing, one of their favorite hymns. But we changed the words a ; bit. We sing, We are sewing, dai- ly sewing, the baby blankets and the burps, she said. LaMar ignored her and continued to stitch around a pastel green receiving blanket . LaMar does the blankets, I do the burps, she said. I prefer to travel. She likes to I go only short distances, he said, as he folded up the finished blanket. If one gets done with their stack first then they help the other person, he said. Some days the stack is very tall and others there are not quite so many. You look at it the tall stack, and dont think you'll ever get done. But you just start at the top and before you know it theyre done, LaMar said. The two start hemstitching between 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. and are usually done by 10 a.m. so they can pursue their other hobbies. After all, we are retired, Lola said. Because of the hemstitching process, the machines seem to ' j travel quickly, but the fabric moves slowly. Lola can hemstitch two burp cloths in five minutes. Lola started sewing baby dresses as a business after they were wed. She took them to Vema Hill in Layton for hemstitching. She heard a radio ad about a for sale in Ogden. She bought it and began hemstitching baby dresses in 1948. A year later hem-stitch- cr hemstitchitigbctwcen 6 a.m. and 6:30 am. and are usually done by 10 am. so tluy can pursue their other hobbies. After all, we are retired, Lola Sessions said. she was asked to hemstitch a blanket. Since then she has sold that machine and has bought three more, the two she and LaMar work on and one set up with green thread in another room of the house specifically to sew LDS temple aprons. LaMar began hemstitching 10 years ago. I was watching her and realized she couldn't handle it all anymore. She needed help, LaMar said. Lola let him hemstitch on a several pieces of flannel before allowing him to touch any of her customers blankets. I still have the first one he did with scallops. Its wrapped around one of my dolls, she said. From the records Lola kept, it is a wonder she did not ask for help sooner. From 1958 to 1996 she has hemstitched 10,149 quilts. She quit hemstitching quilts so she could have time to do her other hobbies, like tatting and China painting. Since 1958 when she started keeping records, she and LaMar have hemstitched 33,684 receiving blankets and 46,932 burp cloths to go with the blankets. har-dang- They hemstitch mostly for friends and neighbors and for a local sew ing store, Sew N Save. They sold so quickly that she ordered more and has kept them busy. Since then Little has bought her own hcmstitcher, which is the same age as Lolas. LaMar said hemstitching machines are difficult to find and even more difficult to take care of because there are no parts for them. You have to take care of these machines. They can drive you out of your mind. They can make a Philadelphia lawyer turn inside out, LaMar said. Once it took four months to have a part made and replaced in LaMar's machine. Im short on patience," he said. Short he may be on patience, but long on dependability. Little said. She knows if LaMar and Lola say something will be done by a certain time, it usually is. Former West Point resident Diane Zaugg agrees. Zaugg of Lewiston told her sister, Cheryl Jacobsen of Salem, Ore., about the couple several years ago. Jacobsen was searching for someone to hemstitch receiving blankets. Since then Jacobsen and several of her fnends will put together receiving blankets and mail them to the couple to hemstitch. They cant find anyone who does this, Zaugg said. To help you celebrate your baby, StandardNET has created Babyland, an online photo album of baby pictures and special moments.
