But when it comes to causes of wildfires, firefighters said humans cause half of them. Out of the fires his crew fights, Rampton said almost all of them involved kids playing with fire. This time of year fireworks are a main concern for firefighters. I cant stress this enough: Be careful with these fireworks, Bodily said. Parents need to supervise their children because, the parents need to know if their kid sets a fire, they're responsible," Rampton said. In terms of preventive measures, Rampton said homeowners can reduce the nsk of having their home consumed by a wildfire by cutting back wild foliage ; by 30 to 50 feet. For state officials, their enemy is cheat grass, a native of Russia brought across with imported wheat, which has managed over the years to nudge out native varieties more resistant to wildfire. Dalrymple said workers on From 1 Cpt. Jim Rampton of South Davis Fire said it is still early in the season for grass fires, but the hot weather has already kicked off what may lay ahead. .We've already had 10 grass fires last week, Rampton said. The grass has already grown almost four feet high and has begun to accumulate not only on mountainsides and fields but also near Davis highways and train tracks.
