The Miss Farmington Scholarship Program is part of the Miss America system, which is the largest scholarship program for women in the world, giving away $40 million in scholarships every year, said Cheryl Newman, chairwoman of Farmingtons annual event. This is the seventh year for the Miss Farmington program. Our girls are very accomplished young women. Weve had girls who are DECA award winners, Sterling Scholars, accomplished musicians, artists and performers, said Newman. The contest is open to girls between the ages of 17 and 24. These programs are no longer a beauty contest. We focus more on service, success and scholarship. We teach the young women they are not better than those they serve and to serve as a role model for other youth, she said. Each girl is asked to prepare a service oriented platform. These young women choose service projects from every area of life, such as mentoring and teaching others how to make good choices and be honest, to child abuse, date rape, as well as projects in the community, she said. Thousands of volunteer hours are given annually by these young women. Nicole Belliston, daughter of Vaughn and Suzanne Belliston, is a 1998 graduate of Davis High School.
