It seeks to make our streets safer, our children healthier and our communities better. It is the lieutenant governors initiative to creative volunteerism throughout the state. As a three-yea- r effort with the Little Red Wagon as .the logo, the program will be more visible and given more Local communities are working to establish and achieve their own goals as well. Some are focusing on safe neighborhoods, while others are establishing mentoring programs and working to recruit tutors for programs. The second, a follow-u- p meeting, invited concerned residents to "take ACTION in our community -neighborhood approach to gang prevention. About 25 key people began to lay the groundwork for an effective volunteer committee in Layton. As an outgrowth on the governors safety on crime in March, Bob Wallace of Layton instigated a meeting to organize a citywide ACTION committee. Since then, the volunteer committee has incorporated as the Layton Community Action Council, under a status with a board of trustees comprised of officers and committee chairmen, with Wallace chairing the Layton Community Action Council. He said that there are three committees actively functioning: youth court, mentoring and safe neighborhoods. "wed like to make this a model ' community, he said. Joseph said that it is important to be a good witness, which involves noticing suspicious activity, people and vehicles. It is easier for neighbors to know what is suspicious in their area than for the police to know. Hyde said that investing in your own neighborhood makes you feel a part of the program. She said that the concept of ownership is very important and with that people will make a more vi- brant commitment.
