WEB BROWSERS: Kaysville Elementary Kyle Williams, 1 0, and Anna Waldron, 1 0, are designing a web page and student newspaper for the school. Here they look for graphics to use in the newspaper. fourth-grade- rs Web site features newspaper Two students design page for Kaysville Elementary School By V1KK1 LEZA Standard-Examine- r Hr- - tfjfjr correspondent AYSVILLE fourth-grader- - Two at Kays- - s ville Elementary are de- a student web page as part of the schools web Site. signing -- Kyle Williams and Anna Waldron, 10, both of Kaysville, created the latest issue of their own newspaper with an HTML (Hypertext markup Language) program on their own tune. .2 The schools web site was created about a year ago as an ave-jnfor each grade level to present projects that their classes have worked on. The site has to teachers, links to Jeacher's pages, and student web Jiages. I The current student pages feature Williams and Waldrons jand Mrs. Starks fust grade Rookie Craze, a collection of cookie recipes submitted by her . class after they made the cookies as a math and science lesson. We were playing together J ne day, says Kyle. I And I said, lets make a newspaper," says Anna. In the first issue Williams wrote a different version of the pTortoise and the Hare, called the Tourist and the Hare. Waldron WTOte a short article, Teen iTrends." and Williams wrote a imini-articl- e on the Titanic. Each ussue afterward had an original Jshort family stop', and on teenage issues. Williams and Waldron mmi-arti-cl- brought in a copy of their homemade newspaper to their teacher, Carolyn Craynor, who brought it up to Pnncipal Beatty as an idea for the web page. Beatty asked the school technology specialist to teach the children a web design program. The moral of their story is that crime doesnt pay, with cartoons to illustrate the story. They each have written a little something, says Cheryl Young, technology specialist at Kaysville Elementary. And they each came up with a cartoon story. Theyve had a great time finding graphics. Waldron wrote Somebody Get the Phone, about a busy mom with an entire family that ignores the phone ringing. Finally, she answers the phone herself only to hear a salesman, U. Doh Netiss, and screams in frustration. Young showed them how to find graphics on Corel Web Designer and the two children have been creating the paper on their own, learning the program within one week. Its fun for children to read the student pages, and for parents and the community to see what the children have come up with. Other schools have even used Kaysville Elementarys site as an example to create their own. "These are two very bright kids. Its been a lot of fun to watch their minds work and do this, says Young. I get from all over the country, says Principal Donald Beatty. The children have been giving up their recess time to learn the web design program and work on the newspaper. This is the fifth issue, but the first one put on the web site. They will still deliver a paper on theu own, learning the program within one week. The Kaysville InPrint is a play on the word imprint. The newspaper has little footprints walking across the paper. Waldron is the publisher, and Williams is the editor in chief. The Stop Littering," shows a duty earth, then a clean earth graphic. Theu comic book stories are plays on words as well, with creative spelling. The story Jury on Duty uses characters such as Mr. Frowdabooc, the defendant; Mr. Vulchure, the lawyer, and Mr. I.C. Nofing, the first witness. mini-articl- Williams wrote a short story on the Twelve Labors of Hercules. One short chapter is printed in each issue. e, Kaysville residents, now living in other states, have run across the web site and contacted the school saying they were students there many years ago. The school also gets an a day from Korea. Korean doctorate students have somehow found our web site. We get responses from all over the world, says Beatty. Kaysville Elementary Schools Home Page can be found at with Williams and Waldron's student newspaper found under the Mrs. Crayners class link. The schools home page slogan is Charging the world one student at a time, or in Williams and Waldrons case, two students at a time. Mason plans a career in genetic engineering.
