Although this is a lot of money, it is still a great deal for the tobacco industry. Let me tell you why I believe this. Up until a few years ago, almost all warnings about tobacco usage were limited to heart disease, cancer, lung disease and toxic poisons found in tobacco and tobacco byproducts. Recently, most warnings mentioned adverse outcomes suffered by developing babies during pregnancy if tobacco exposure is suffered by a mother. Tens of thousands of babies are born each year with health-car- e problems related to maternal smoke exposure. These problems can last a lifetime. Yet not one suit has been brought against the tobacco industry on behalf of a child. There is talk of class action suits. The Academy of Pediatrics has taken a strong stance advocating The rights of tobacco industry victims to seek compensation for injuries they have suffered. The tobacco industry should not be immu- nized from accountability for its wrongdoing. What wrongdoing? Under oath before the congress of the United States, executives from the Tobacco Institute lied about their findings concerning adverse health affects of tobacco use; lied about additives to promote addition and taste enhancement and lied about second hand smoke ef--1 fects. Yet, to the individual, they reportedly said they would not encourage their children to use tobacco products. Let's see why. Tobacco contains thousands of substances and byproducts, n many of which are poisons. Some of these poisons cause decreased blood flow to the uterus with decreased oxygen and nutrient delivery to the de- v eloping baby. Many substances easily cross the placenta and harm the babys developing organs. After birth, babies and children exposed to tobacco poisons and irritants absorb the poisons into their bodies with adverse results. No matter how the baby or child is exposed, residual affects can remain for life. Mothers and fathers who smoke risk having their unborn child develop the following prob- Many ' well-know- lems: Growth retardations with birth weights averaging 12 pound less. Asphyxia. Twenty percent of babies bom to smokers have strong evidence of having suffered chronic asphyxia (i.e. lack of oxygen). Stillbirth. Defects involving the heart, face, lungs, spine and limbs. Davis Health Withdrawal. Infant withdrawal is similar to that experienced with cocaine or heroin exposure. Interestingly, babies exposed to cocaine and nicotine before birth appear to have undergone a chemical change in the brain. If and when exposed to nicotine or cocaine later in life, they are much more rapidly addicted. Even fathers who smoke are more likely to sire children with birth defects. Also, passive smoke from the burning end of a cigarette contains twice the nicotine and tar, and five times the level of carbon monoxide found in the smoked end. Mothers exposed to a smoking person can inhale the equivalent of one pack per day. There are other effects of tobacco exposure on babies and children. More than 6,000 newborn and childhood deaths are associated with tobacco use each year. The more a parent smokes, the more likely their newborn will die from various causes. SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) is three to four times more likely. Babies prematurely bom (before 33 weeks) are twice as likely to have bleeding into the brain; almost four times as likely if exposed to tobacco. Babies bom to smokers are more prone to be described as difficult, with irritability, vomiting, diarrhea, colic, sleep disturbances and feeding problems the main complaints. Older infants are much more likely to suffer from chronic ear infections and associated speech delay. Hospitalizations are 2.8 times more likely with asthma, bronchitis and pneumonia the leading causes. Where universal testing is standard, children bom to mothers who smoke are found to be three to five months academically behind schoolmates in the seventh and 1 1th grades. Hand and eye coordination skills are delayed. Mental retardation is 50 percent more likely to be found in children whose mothers smoked as few as five cigarettes per week while pregnant. Atten- tobacco induced disease in this country are at least 50 billion annually. The cost of treating children who never smoke but require health care because of tobacco smoke exposure is over $6 billion each year. Lets see what we take away from ourselves and our children on a personal level. If a mother and father each saved the cost of one pack of cigarettes per day in a simple certificate of deposit, they would have more than $50,000 by the time their child reached 18 years of age. If you want to be more than a millionaire, save the cost of two packs of cigarettes a day for 50 years and youll be one. Who would you rather give the money - the greedy, dishonest tobacco industry? Or you and your child? Because the statute of limitations allows children to sue for prior injury once they reach the age of 1 8, the tobacco industry is more than happy to try to buy their way out of responsibility for a mere $368 billion over 25 years.
