The suspects are scheduled to be arraigned on charges of riot and aggravated assault by Feb. 4. Charges reduced in baby shaking case FARMINGTON - A long history of mental illness has prompted Davis County prosecutors to reduce the charges against a man accused of severely shaking his girlfriends son. Thomas Eskelsen was initially charged with attempted aggravated murder, which includes a possible sentence of up to life in pnson. But in court earlier this month Eskelsen accepted a plea agreement offered by prosecutors pleading guilty to a reduced charge of child abuse, which carries a maximum of 15 years in prison. The incident occurred last Sept. 24 when Eskelsen, an unemployed cook, was tending Tristan Halverson. Police say Eskelsen violently While playing with his neighbor recently before afternoon kindergarten classes, Jacob Mortensen tnes to upright the familys snuwman. THE LEANING MAN OF SNOW: syndrome. Taylor also said he staged the slaying to look like a robbery and sexual assault to draw attention away from Paul Allen. Wright, testified Allen told him the bulk of the payoff money would come from a life insurance policy. Defense attorney Ron Yen-gic- h argued in a memo that the evidence against Paul Allen is entirely circumstantial, and the testimony of Wright and Taylor is unreliable. and Taylor Wright were but charged with capital murder, avoided possible death-penalt- y convictions by agreeing to testify. Wright will plead to two e felonies and would serve no more than 10 years in third-degre- prison. Taylor will plead to first-degrfelony murder, which carries a prison term. FARMINGTON - Paul Christopher Allen, who is ac- cused of hiring two men to kill his wife, will remain in jail pending trial, a judge ruled. State law provides that a person charged with a capital offense is not entitled to bail if there is substantial evidence to support the charge. Second District Judge Michael Allphin ruled Tuesday, Jan. 20, that the evidence against Allen was sufficient to keep him in jail. Allens trial was assigned to Judge Glen Dawson. An arraignment date has not been set. Allen is charged with aggravated murder, punishable by death; and conspiracy to commit aggravated murder and criminal felsolicitation, both onies. Allphins ruling relied on preliminary hearing testimony earlier this month. Allen is accused of hiring Joseph Scrgious Wright for $30,000 to find someone to kill his wife. Wright, in turn, promised to pay George Anthony Taylor $10,000 to kill the woman, according to testimony.
