There's s ' aft t I f f I . George Cook, who has been principal of the school since it opened 10 years ago, is retiring. Mr. Cook is the greatest. There is no one else on this earth who cares more about children and teachers than he docs. And that's absolutely true. We will miss him so much," said third-grad- e teacher LeAnn Thompson. Faculty, community members and current and former students gathered earlier this month at an open house to honor Cook. They shared memories and wished Cook luck in his retirement pursuits. Cook started teaching in 1968 at West Point Elementary School. He taught fourth and sixth grades. In 1979, he was promoted to principal of Pioneer Elementary. After one year he was transferred and became principal of Fremont Elementary from 1980 to 1987. When West Clinton Elementary was built in 1987, he came to the school as principal. He was the principal of both Fremont Elementary and West Clinton Elementary in 1979, while administrators found a replacement for Fremont Elementary. It was a little tricky being principal of two schools at once. But Fremont was a good school and ran itself very well, and West Clinton was new and the staff really worked hard. I was challenged running between the two, but both schools had great stalfs and they just kept working. I wasn't ideal, but we did survive, Cook said. LaRue King has been Cook's secretary since he has been a principal, but she isn't retiring. King will stay and look after West .Clinton Elementary. It's hard leaving her. We had a pact, we were going to leave together. She's been my secretary for 19 years, and we were going to wait a few more years and go out together, Cook said. But I couldnt live up to my end. Mr. Cook was a great man to work for, King said. He's not one to run around with a whistle and clipboard and keep track of us. It has been a pleasure to work with him." One of Cook's former students, Natalie Gcmcnts Masero. spoke at his retirement open house. Cook was Mascro's teacher when she was in fourth grade 21 years ago. Mr. Cook always instilled in us the desire to be the best; he wanted us to be the best singers and performers in the operettas and Christmas programs," Masero said. He had us all convinced that we were the best class in the whole school. It wasn't until later in life that I realized the wisdom in that. Children ate what you tell them they are. Cook plans to stay busy during his retirement, restoring his antique cars, farming his land in Plain City and spending time with his wife, Charleen, and his children, Judd and Jennifer. In a way, it's hard to go, Cook said. I'm going to miss the kids and the friendships I have with the teachers. I'm going to miss the associations with my stafT and the community.
