Alicia would really like to know. Martinez of Layton found the sandstone more than 14 years ago in Sdudi Arabia, and cherished its uniqueness until it was stolen from her front yard last August. Martinez lived in Saudi Arabia when she discovered the stone, a result of petrified and forms found in the desert deep in the sand. This particular stone was shaped like a rose - or rather, a few roses. A group of people would gather on w eekends and go to the desert and dig in the sand, Martinez said. We called it our Caravan of Americans. " Her husband was employed with McDonnell Douglas at the time, and other ' employees of the company stuck together and went digging" often, Martinez said. Martinez stone is of particular rarity because of its size and shape. Martinez that said when she found the stone, she knew she had to have it. 1 begged my husband to help me get it out, it was so big I could not get it alone, Martinez said. 1 told him that I never asked for a lot of things, so please help me with this. Martinez said her husband found someone else to help and they dug the sandstone out together. The next big step was getting it back to the United States. "Taking the stone was kind of gutsy, Martinez said. But it was her cherished souvenir of Saudi Arabia and she was definitely not leaving it there. She and her husband tied fabric beanbugs on either side of the stone to protect it and brought it home to Utah. It has always been quite a conversation piece displayed on her front porch, Martinez added. Martinez always considered the stone just that, a wonderful souvenir and conversation piece, although many people told her it was worth a lot of money. People would say it was worth S800 to $ 1 ,000 in London, but I didn't care about that, it was just my little souvenir, she said. Martinez added that she thinks that the value of the stone was the reason it was . stolen. Stealing the rock must have been no easy feat, Martinez said, considering the stone weighed at least 50 pounds. Thats why its disappearance is so peculiar. She remembers hearing nothing strange the night the stone disappeared. There were footprints in the sand outside my house, Martinez said, but no other clues. Martinez filed a report with the Layton police and has checked rock stores frequently but has seen or heard nothing since the disappearance. One rock shop employee Martinez checked with at Rock Pick Legend Company remembered Martinez's inquiry about the sandstone. He said that in this area, the size sandstone Martinez describes probably isn't worth as much money as it would be in other parts of the world. Local dealers probably would only pay about 550 to SI 50 because cry stal sandstones are common in Utah. I would just like to have my souvenir from Saudi Arabia back, Martinez said. If anyone has information on this stone, Martinez has offered a reward. Please contact the Layton Police Department with any possible information. the project.
