Show 8 LAKESIDE Saturday, April 27, 1996 Lakeside Review Syracuse WSU student to visit wealthiest man Three get to attend shareholders meeting A Weber State University finance student from Syracuse will have the opportunity to spend a day with Warren Buffet, the wealthiest man in the United States. Aaron Pattillo will join two other WSU students to meet with Buffett, who is considered by many to be the worlds greatest investor, as they attend the annual shareholders meeting of Berkshire Hathaway. Pattillo, Rex Baxter of Ogden and Lee Payne of Helper will travel to Omaha, Neb., May 6, to meet Buffet and his investment partner, Charlie Munger. The students opportunity to attend the shareholders meeting began when businessman William Child, who recently sold his R.C. Willey furniture company to Buffet, donated 20 shares of Berkshire Hathaway stock to the WSU College of Business and Economics. The price of admission into a Berkshire Hathaway meeting is a bit restrictive since a single stock costs in excess of $32,000, said Michael Vaughan, dean of the College of But Business and Economics. when I received this years annual report I realized that we could use our rights as shareholders to give our students an educational opportunity they could not get at any other university. So when I discussed the idea with a group of finance students their enthusiasm exploded. Both Vaughan and Baxter sent letters to Buffet proposing the con cept. This is a wonderful chance to apply what we've learned to actual business situations, Payne said. We are very fortunate to be able to watch the investment strategy and financial genius of Buffet and Munger firsthand." While the typical shareholders meeting doesnt bear any resemblance to a college classroom, Buffet's annual meeting cannot be described as typical. Full poses By CHAD McKIMSON LANCE JOHNSON ;and - ON THE USS NIMITZ The U.S. Navy is often seen as a worldwide watchdog and its aircraft carri- ers are the doberman pinschers whose presence is enough to deter most aggressors. Recently, the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz kept a watchful eye while China conducted military exercises in the Taiwan Strait. The 95,000-to- n carrier, which is on station in the Western Pacific, was enforcing U.N. sanctions against Iraq in the Arabian Gulf when it got the call to head toward the South China Sea. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael J. King, the son of Michael and Rose King of Clinton, is one of the more than 5,000 Sailors on the ship. Although the increased operations of a carrier on deployment has kept King busy, he still finds the experience rewarding. I enjoy saving lives and fighting fires, said King. King, an aviation boatswains mate, works as part of the crash rescue team on the flight deck. King and the Nimitz demonstrated their flexibility by traveling more than 4,000 miles from the Arabian Gulf to the South China Sea in less than a week. The ability to quickly project a powerful presence in any comer of the globe is a crucial part of naval operations. Today, U.S. aircraft carriers continue to operate from the Indian Ocean and Western Pacific to the Arabian Gulf and the Mediterranean Sea. Aircraft carriers like the Nimitz, with more than 80 aircraft, serve as a deterrent to potential aggressors and can respond on short notice to any crises around the world. le & Perm.
