But trying to make sure the nests stay undisturb ed and the eggs get a chance to hatch is a real challenge, some Lay-to- n homeowners have learned. ' I just put together a new flower arrangement for my front door, said Maureen Cook. It's a basket full of some bright and colorful silk tulips and soon after that, we noticed that some birds were flying in land out of it. Before long, there was indeed a small little nest, tucked in behind the flowers and soon after that, it ! held five small eggs. They looked like little jelly beans, she said. The novelty of sporting such an unusual set of new neighbors, right i on their front door, held a few sur-y- -, prises for the Cook family. n Once someone opened the door and the bird just flew right into the house. I panicked, thinking it would hurt or even kill itself flying into one of the windows, trying to get out. It was really a real tense moment," she said. What exact species of bird the It Cooks and others are dealing with is uncertain. Yet, according to Jake -Faibisch, information education manager of the Ogden branch of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resource, V its likely they are English sparrows. Thats only a guess, he said, not actually seeing the birds. But, its not terribly uncommon for this type of a bird to nest around dwell- - ings. These are exotic birds, mean-in- g they are not native to this continent, and are usually more of a plain brown in color. They can become a pest, but actually seem to do I well around people," he said. "We put out a sign, directing people around to the side door, said Cook, mother of five and wife of Layton physician Johnnie Cook. "The kids have all thought it was the neatest thing. 4 Patrice Quigley reported a similar experience in a flower arrange- ment near her front door. T It was doing so well. Weber and Davis Canal Company representative Lee Cammack, who is also the citys engineer, explained the challenges and benefits of secondary water to the city council Tuesday. The canal company would be happy to do it as fast as youre ready, he said. If the city goes with secondary water, the project would be completed in three phases. City officials would start putting in the first phase in 1997. The second phase would be put in 1998 with the entire project completed by around 2000. EGGS CETERA: They looked like Easter candy," she said. We were watching it closely, being totally careful, she said. But the other day, the neighbors cat got at it and its been destroyed. My daughter Emily just sobbed. It had been so fun watching them build a nest. Faibisch has few words of advice regarding birds building so close to a dwelling. The best thing to do if this happens, is basically just to ignore it as he said. "Birds much as possible, are pretty adaptable and will either go ahead and adjust to whats going on around them, or if the traffic is too heavy they may move and nest elsewhere. The Cooks believe the mother has abandoned their nest. "It's been a few days since weve seen the parents around. Ive heard they can leave a nest for up to two weeks and still come back and go on with the incubation period. I hope thats right," said Maureen Cook. ' Faibisch said there may be a chance that the birds are around. Its just that they seem to disappear when people approach, he said. It's really hard to say." less. For lots larger than one acre the price would be $300. Cluff said that breaks down to $16.67 a month for the smaller plots. For some this plan will cost less than culinary water, for others it may be more, said Cluff. He said the change may cost many residents more the first few just bought more water, with secondary water in place, hopefully we wont have to buy more for ten years or more. ClufT added that secondary water may prevent the city from having to build a new reservoir. The council will be passing out brochures on the proposal throughout the community. They are planning to hold public hearings on the issue some time within the next few months. Dates for those hearings have not yet been set. g It was a real picture," said Tracy Heun, parks and recreation director. happy-lookin- The tree was planted in Bicentennial Park, 800 E. 650 South.
