Show 8 Saturday. April LakesideLifestyle 20. 1996 Lakeside Review Give baskets creative look Brushing up is here and baskets are in in the crafts stores, stores, grocery stores, drug stores, and even fruit stands. Use them in their natural beauty, or stain them with wood stain, or use fabric dye, acrylic paint, spray paint, or even potato stamps to brighten them up. tern. Spring Sponge painting Sponge painting the inside and outside of the basket provides a good painting surface, but isnt necessary. Watered-dow- n acrylic paint lets the grain of the basket show through and still provides a colorful background. Kitchen sponges can be cut into strips to make painting fast and easy. Blotting the sponge on the basket adds texture to your masterpiece. Blotting one color over another can add even more texture. Deciding which effect to do will probably be the hardest thing about this. Potato stamps Potato stamps work best on the flat reed baskets. They are easy to do, and even children can help if perfection isnt a necessity. Small cookies cutters make good patterns for the stamps. Acrylic paint and a brush is all that is needed to com plete the supplies. Cut a medium potato in half using a sharp knife to get a smooth surface. Take the cookie cutter and press into the cut part of the potato. Take a paring knife and cut away everything around the cookie cutter while its still in the potato. Take off the cookie cutter and your pattern is complete. alPatterns can be cut so. Use a small, sharp knife and use simple patterns. Coloring books are a good place to look for simple pat- terns. Blot the potato on a paper towel to get rid of the starchy water which can leave a white, dusty film on the finished product. With the paint brush and the acrylic paint, paint the potato with the paint, or dip the potato in a shallow bowl or pie tin of paint. Practice on a piece of paper to see how the print turns out. Paint again beand stamp the basket. tween stamps to ensure an even pat v At . LOOKING AT LANDSCAPES: Checklist ensures home safety Though most of us are conscientious about our homes for infant visitors, we may not be so attuned to the safety needs of older visitors such as parents or grandparents. child-proofi- to Leona Hawks, housing specialist in the USU College of Family Life, falls are one of the most common household injuries, especially among the elderly. She suggests going through your home with this checklist: According Are there any places in the house that a person could trip? Carpets with lumps or floor materials that change elevation can cause falls. Are there steps? If so, make sure that handrails are sturdy and securely attached to walls. Steps should have non-sli- p face and be well lighted. sur- Check for holes, tears and lumps in floor covering that can cause a materials trip. Have under scatter rugs and runners. Clean up spills immediately. Spills can quickly make surface slick. slip-reside- nt Grab bars in showers and tubs W. Point are important safety devices for persons of all ages. Make sure grab bars are attached through tile and into the structural supports inside the wall. A loose grab bar may be more dangerous than no grab bar at all. If you are unsure about installation, get some qualified help. Bathtubs and showers should be equipped with non skid mats, adhesursive strips or other faces. For persons who arent steady on their feet, a stool with nonskid tips on the legs can be used in the shower or bathtub. nt Do you have night lights in the hallway between the bedroom and bathroom for persons unfamiliar with your home layout? If you have high or hard to reach cupboards, make sure you have a stable and sturdy stool in good repair. Make sure all bolts and screws are tightened. Makeshift stools such as boxes, chairs or crates can lead to serious falls. When buying a new stool, consider one with hand rails. pageant slated for June - The open house will begin at 6 p.m. with a brief program. Speakers will include Stake Pres- ident S. Clair Bankhead and former Layton City Mayor Jim Layton, Little potato stamps can be used around the band at the top of the basket and along the bands through the basket for an overall pattern: Alternate colors and patterns for a nice variety. Bigger prints can be stamped on the body of the basket, and dont forget the handle. Have fun with the stamps, but keep; the artwork simple. The stamps are intended to enhance the basket,; not ! wallpaper it. free-han- d, Basket uses Baskets big enough to sit on the floor are great for loose shoes, newspapers, plants, toys, or even trash. Smaller baskets can be used for organizing bathrooms, bedrooms, crafts, or clutter on the kitchen counter. They are a homey addition to the front entry, or even the front porch. Re-pai- nt , Visitors are invited to attend to learn about the LDS Church organizations and auxiliaries. For further information, President Nathan Vest at call 771-212- 0. "Letters To Mother" lems.
