When Dr. Steven Mark told Dave and Stephanie Thornley of Layton that they were expecting and that the babys due date was Feb. 29, the Thomleys were elated. On the way home from the doctors office they realized that Feb. 29 was Leap Day. The Thomleys two other children hadnt been bom on their due dates, so they decided this baby would probably come earlier or later also. But early in the morning on Feb. 29, Stephanie Thornley began to have contractions. The couple reached Davis Hospital and realized the baby was coming on Leap Day after all. Their baby girl, Emily Thornley, was born at 10:40 a.m. and weighed 6 pounds 12 ounces. Christel Reames was induced Feb. 28, because Dr. Craig Hall was afraid her baby was getting too General opportunities The Utah chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America needs volunteers to help with the clerical and bulk mailings at the Layton office. But her labor lasted all day and all night and continued into Feb. 29. The infant, Jared, was finally bom at 6:04 p.m. The couple didnt settle on a name for the baby for several days, said Robert Reames. ' His wife couldnt believe she had a Leap Day baby. Im toying not to feel sorry for him. A birthday is a special thing and he only gets one once every four years. Well make birthdays special for him. The babys older sisters thought it was neat and cool to have a Leap Year brother. Schalonaca Brunsilius had her labor induced Feb. 29. Dr. (Michael) Rhoades said that he could induce me on Thursday and I was so tired of being pregnant, I said OK. I didnt even really realize it was Leap Year, said Brunsilius. She and her husband, Wayne, are the proud parents of a baby girl dresser. The baby was bom at 8:20 p.m. and James Rich of the Hansen tarium said Chandler and the other babies will indeed have a birthday in the year 2000. Normally, there is no Leap Year in a century year. The exception is when a century year is divisible by four. For example, there is no Leap Year in 1900 or in 2100, but there is a Leap Year in 1600 or in 2000, said Eliza-usu- al weighed exactly 7 pounds. The Brunsiliuses laugh when they say that when Elizabeth is 40 she still wont technically be old enough to vote. Paul and Denise Harrison of Clearfield also scheduled an induction Feb. 29. They didnt realize that date's significance but didnt want to reschedule for a few days later. Their baby boy. Chandler Paul Harrison, was bom at 8:40 p.m. and weighed 7 pounds 13 ounces. Harrison planned to have a natural childbirth, but Chandler was delivered by Caesarean section by Dr. Steven Meek. The baby is the Harrisons first. They were unsure if the baby would have a birthday in the year 2000, because it marks the beginning of a new century. Rich. Cushing started teaching at Clearfield High School for one year before teaching for 20 years at Viewmont High. He taught LDS seminary for one year at South Davis Junior High School and returned to teach art at Farming-to- n Junior High for another year. Cushing says he missed working with high school-age- d students. He heard of an opening at Davis High School, and has been there for four years. During these four years, Cushing has prepared and encouraged students in commercial art and used his commercial art experience to benefit the school and the students. As a freelance commercial illustrator, he has dealt with and phoaspects of production, tography. Cushing has also started a calendar that contains students artwork along with the school policies, procedures and information. The calendar is sold for $2 to students when they register for school and has raised more than $10,000 over the past four years. The money goes back into the school for the benefit of the students. We dont want to compete with business, it all goes back to the kids and in training the kids," says Cushing. The funds from the calendars enabled the with a new students to silk-scre- 299-850- 8. ' have a philosophy and its a...readiness that I use to try to get them used to art history and aesthetics to catch their attention. -- Roger Cushing I Weve all experienced a few bendable carrots and fuzzy, green cheese, but what about food that just looks slightly odd? Many normal chemical reactions change the appearance of food but dont make it harmful to eat, says Charlotte Brennand, food scientist in the Utah State University College of Family Life. For example, aystals are a common occurrence in foods. They may form in grape juice because it's high in tartaric acid, she says. The crystals generally appear in the bottom of the jars of grape juice. These can be avoided by refrigerating the juice overnight, then pouring it carefully so as not to disturb the precipitate on the bottom. Jelly may crystallize because of excess sugar in the final product. Undissolved sugar on the sides of the cooking kettle can promote crystal growth. Although storage at cool temperatures is desirable for jelly, sugar is less soluble at these temperatures and thus more likely to crystallize. White crystals may form in the refrigerated drippings from roast turkey. This is a result of the phosphates and curing brines used to make the roasted turkey more tender and moist. At cool temperatures, however, these salts tend to crystallize. Another area of concern for consumers is colorization, which Brennand says also often occurs naturally- The red or maroon colored joint or roasted chicken is due to hemoglobin leaking out of the bone marrow in the chicken leg. This is especially common for young birds because the bone is less dense. For magenta thighs on roasted turkey, this happens occasionally when a turkey has undergone a long roasting period. It tends to happen more often in gas ovens because of the small amounts of carbon dioxide reacting with the birds pigment which is highest in concentration in the thigh meat. It is not an indication of the turkeys being undercooked. The rainbow effect? on sliced meat does not necessarily mean the meat is spoiled. During the slicing process the fat is smeared over the meat Light refracts off the fat to give the rainbow effect, much like oil on a puddle of water. Brennand says browning is likely to occur in produce. Fresh produce often browns because of normal reaction between oxygen and enzymes in the produce. in thawed to make art come alive for them, to have an appreciation and get involved, says Cushing. Cushing teaches with a cooperative approach, using projects with a lot of group interaction that requires cooperation among the students.
