Some are just plain odd, said spectator Jared Hughes of Clearfield. The eggs sold in grocery stores come from laying hens or leghorn chickens. They are large poultry and compete in the large class. The bantam, or dwarf, class also competed. .Breeders and hobbyists like the bantam because its smaller, takes up less space, and costs less to feed. He currently has more than 100 on his farm, The Rhode Island Red is a mahogany color with a black tail and lays a trademark large, brown egg. Commercially, Rhode Island Reds are used for meat and egg production, but Montgomery raises his chickens strictly as a hobby. Most chicken breeds originated in Asia, Europe, or the Mediterranean, but a few breeds, including the Rhode Island Red, originated in America, said Montgomery. He shows his chickens at poultry shows all over the Western U.S. This year he didnt come away a big winner, but his grandson, Scott Montgomery, won the Rhode Island Red class. The Utah Fancy Poultry Association hosts two chicken shows a year. The Davis show was a national competition, the first held in Utah in 10 years, said Montgomery. The next local competition will be the third weekend in October at the Davis County FairPark. To prepare for a competition, a chicken is bathed and its feathers are washed with ordinary shampoo and cream rinse. The chicken is then rinsed thoroughly.
