And Ryans answer is simply I'm an expert. Most of the resorts offer recreational racing arid Park City has town races where the Coombs race after work at night. The children compete in mostly recreation racing in alpine or giant slalom, and their parents do masters events. The masters division includes top adult racers who are members of the U.S. Ski Association and have a competitor's license. Recreational skiing is not as competitive. Craig said. There hasnt been too much snow to shovel from the driveway but plenty in the resorts. Frompagnl Ord in no way encourages building bombs, she wants students to know that science doesnt have to be difficult. A girls success in science often depends on her fathers attitude. If a father is encouraging, the girl will usually succeed. If he tells her shes just a girl and doesnt need math and science, she will have a harder time. Many parents can feel intimidated by their own lack of knowledge in a changing world. "A lot of parents feel helpless when it comes to helping their children with science and math, but they can learn right along with their children, said Ord. One of the ways to deal with the gap in learning is to form study groups with other children in the neighborhood. Ord secs peer tutoring as a major source of help because the students can assist each fast-pacc- d. other. When someone doesnt understand a concept, usually one of the other students docs and can help. Mostly they need someone to talk to who is willing to help, said Ord. She also secs a greater sense of compassion and understanding when the youth help their friends who struggle in school. Ord said she also realizes that some teachers have more interest and understanding in the scientific fields than others. She plans to sot up workshops where teachers can learn in such a way that they will be enthusiastic about what they have learned and will go back to the classrooms and teach their students. The new supervisor hopes to be able to involve the whole in the growing scientific world. She said volunteers can make a difference in a classroom whether or not they have children in that age group or not. She said the greatest success comes when people in the family, community and school can work together for the good of the children. Volunteers can help both students that arc struggling and also those that arc ahead of their peers academically. house gave people a chance to tour the school and meet teachers and helped to get people involved, A lot didnt know what lo expect I think it will be a good positive experi- ence. . I citing the children know about the changes this early has helped, ll get all of the anstenes out. said Kofoed. Her children have found the school to he just as mec as the one they are leaving. hen change is inevitable you have to have a positive attitude or it will ailed the kids. she said. Kofocds main concern is the walk to school. 1 hey live across the street from students who will he walking to Cast Layton when her children are walking to King. There is no sidewalk on her side of 1 000 North so the children will have to walk across the street or not walk on a sidewalk. There is no crossing guard to help them cross, she said. There is a traffic signal at Road and 1 0U0 North but no Fair-Fie- ld crossing guard there cither. Miya is setting up a safety committee to work on those problems, she said. Im extremely happy working Steve Mangel, principal at Mueller Park Junior High where Ord has taught for several years, thinks she will contribute greatly to the success of the rest of the children in Ihc district. We'll have a great advisor. Wc hate to lose her at the school but Virginia Ord is probably one of tho best professionals Ive met in all the time Ive been in the business. She knows science and she is n throughout Ihc nation," said .Mangel. He indicated Ord was instrumental in obtaining a NASA space and weather station for Ihc school which has opened doors for many of the students entering science. When Virginia began teaching at the junior high school, there were only two science classes for because it is an ihc ninth-gradeoptional class. Now, I think nearly every student takes science and the kids do well when they get to high school and take the upper level science classes." said the principal. Her classes arc not just theory. She helps the students sec the practical applications of science in their own lives and teaches them how to think. said Mangel. Ord was a state finalist for the 1994 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching. Other honors include the Davis Schools Teacher Hall of Fame and Utah Science Teachers Associations Distinguished Service Award. She was president of the Utah Science Teachers Association and is program coordinator for the National Science Teachers Association regional convention, which will be in Salt Lake City later this year. Ord is currently serving a three-yeterm on the state advisory council on science and technology. The donation was included with the group's $10 reservation fee for the use of the park as a resting point during the committee's ' annual American Investment Bank Century Bicycle Ride from the Utah State Fairpark to Hooper and Antelope Island. " 'Founders park is essential to this event. said Dan Mayhew, committee chairman. The donation came from money raised by the committee. Syracuse has been planning to put the fountain in for some time, and the donation is very welcome.
