By KATHY KELLY 5iua f LAYTON Welcome to BKAT radio. greets a celebrity voice with added sound cfTccts and music over the school intercom. in Don Beatty's class at East Laton Elementary, a year-roun- d school, have worked to put together a variety of programs similar to commercial radio for the other sixth-grad- e classes throughout the year. Each show has been written and produced by students in the class. Though it's not radio in the real sense, they do use a complex sound system which is controlled by the youth. Beatty applied for and received two separate grants from the state for experimental and innovative programs for his classroom. He used his own musical background and interest in sound systems to teach his students a fun way of using their classroom lessons. Beatty likes to use the radio station Sixth-grade- He is a member of the National Honor . , Society and an Eagle Scout. Students receiving the annual award are s, William Brewer. Heidi Eastman, Dan Brandi Kawaguchi. Erik Keller, Jason Livingston, Bonne Pcrsson and Michelle Sorenson. The Hope of America is given to students excelling in leadership, ethical and sixth-grade- Gil-lin- DECORATING hole-langua- in to the teacher for corrections and approval. Suggestions arc made and subjects of interest and concern arc prepared for the approximately programs. The script is refined and re- hearsed by various hosts STORE FREE ing recess. The program is then broadcast to other sixth-grad- e classes, usually in the morning. Some of the local radio personalities have contributed to the air time, both in the school studio (which is at the back of the room) and on commercial radio. Scott Tisher from KISN 97 Radio has recorded several voice impersonations of famous people to enliven the recordings. Sometimes guest speakers arc invited to participate. According to Holt Elementary secretary teacher nomiAnne Clark, each sixth-grad- e nates two students from his class each year for the honor. Its a special award because they only give two from every class, and they watch you from kindergarten to sixth grade, Bonne Persson said.
