This peak is situated 3.5 miles-nortof the radar towers at an elevation of 9,707 feet. The proposal has been presented to the geographic names committee. Linda Smith Thurston, the pioneer who recognized the potential of the valley and encouraged others to join him to build the road and settle in the area, has never received any recognition for his foresight and perseverance. Morgan County Historical walls, had deterred travelers from using this route for many years. Society The stalwart pioneers persevered were finally successful in comand a former resident of Thurston, a crude though passable pleting Centerville, is recognized for being yon. It is felt this honor and recognition is long overdue. We have received letters of en- dorsement from the following groups in Morgan County: Morgan city mayor and council members, Morgan Utah North LDS Stake, Morgan Utah LDS Stake presidency, Morgan Fine Arts Study Group, Morgan County Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, Morgan Board of Education, and the Morgan Lions w Club. We have also received an en- dorsement from the Davis County Commission. The proposal, if approved by the U.S. Geological Survey, Mapping Division, will include holding a ceremony on the site of the highest point and marking that point with a small marker. Give mountain a name we can all look up to A proposal to give Davis County's highest mountain a name presents an interesting opportunity. Sure, we can name it after a worthy pioneer, such as what the Morgan County Historical Society is proposing, but then we would let slip through our hands the chance to gain some notoriety. How many chances do you get to name a mountain? Let's be creative. Ive come up with some sug- gestions: SEAN BRADLEY MOUNTAIN. because hes the only one in the state who can see over the top of it. We could simply call it ALLAS after Lavtons fire chief, or better yet. PEEK PEAK. SSEAK-A-PEAsince the mountain has been hiding out all these years without a name. Davis County has one of the youngest overall populations in the state; we could name it after the popular childhood game View point Andy Howell 0m County editor growing there will be homes on the summit in a couple of years. ELEMENTARY PEAK, since it is the only spot in North Davis County where the Davis School District can build an elementary school that is out of Hill Air Force Bases flight path.. We could call it MOUNT BAL-Din recognition of half the men in Davis County, a group I. will, probably be joining in the not-to- o distant future. . THURGOOD PEAK, since we might as well name it after half the residents of North Davis County. . PEAK-A-BO- We could dub it MOUNT LA H -- of a former Davis County Commissioner who was successful in transforming molehills into mountains. How about EARLY PEAK in recognition of the Utah Jazz's RESCE 1992-9- 3 in recognition season. Then theres LAYTON MOUNTAIN, since at the rate the city is ALUS PEAK, to go with the city and the creek. We could call it MOUNT EVERgive local hikers something to brag about. EST to GOP MOUNTAIN would give the downtrodden county Demo- crats something tangible to Scale. Last but not least, theres PER- OT PEAK, in recognition of his in- -. credible ego.
