Show Lakeside Review, Wednesday. August 23. Lakeside i - Whats your opinion of Job Corps A new national Job Corps poli- cy has been implemented that V'.bars centers from dismissing stu- dents who have tested positive as virus carriers. In order to carry out these new . 1989- - 3 AIDS policy? guidelines, Clearfield Job Corps . has set up a team to manage and enforce the new policy. Under the new guidelines, ef-fective Aug. 1, the local center is L N 'C: v ; I I : r.v ; ; required to retain corps members who have tested positive for hu-- iman immunodeficiency virus, or HIV, which causes acquired im-- f mune deficiency syndrome. This policy has evoked some controversy, even among Job Corps members, at least one of which sent an anonymous letter to the Standard-Examincom- plaining about the policy of re- -; taining virus carriers at the er ; ' . center. In an effort to seek out com- munity opinion on this policy and the AIDS issue in general, 1 the Lakeside Review asked sever- al Davis County residents in random interviews to express their feelings concerning the new AIDS . policy at the Clearfield Job Corps Center. The paper also asked I Don Myrtle, center director, his opinion on the issue. Don Myrtle, Clearfield Job I per Corps Center director see dont sonally any problem ! - with the policy. The one thing its got going for it is the strict management of the policy. Anne Callahan Tina Redmond, Clearfield I think its right (the AIDS policy) because theyre The biggest problem I thought just human. Its something was going to have to deal with theyve caught by accident and resident I is the reaction to it. The policy gives us some real good leverage in dealing with (AIDS) cases. There was some misinterpretation with the policy, but I think that has been resolved. I am not out recruiting AIDS students. The mandatory testing is also a plus in that the students will be identified early on. its not their fault and we should treat them like they treat us. We should treat them like humans. They should be able to go to class, eat and use the same bathroom we do. And not have separate things to do, like when they had slavery with the blacks on one street and the whites on another street. We shouldnt put people with something wrong on one street and people with nothing wrong on another street. Rachel Edwards, Clearfield I think they should resident be treated equally. If they were killers or something like that then I could see it, but they arent going to go kill somebody. Henry R. Olesen, West Point If AIDS can only be resident caught one way, I cant see anything wrong with going to school with people with AIDS. To the idealistic and elitist environmental purist, however, who sees a thin ribbon of asphalt snaking into the vast Escalante Canyon region as total destruction, no amount of human use of the land is acceptable. Use by the elitist environmental pursuit excepted of course. If Owens was truly representing Utahns, he would tell the truth about Utah when he is back East. He would tell his elitist friends and associates that Utahns do not need to be locked out of their lands by congressional wilderness designation in order to protect them. He could tell them that Utah schools) would be no, because hav- of the other children and the ing to do is comply with the law. I know that in the United States theyve had several cases of places where schools didnt want children with AIDS to attend school in that community and the courts said they had to. So I dont think theyve got a teachers welfare. Anne Callahan, Chicago resident who is visiting relatives in I think people Clearfield with AIDS should have rights, but then again its hard for me to judge because I dont know if Id want to be in the same area with, using the same utilities, the same bathrooms as people with AIDS, but I still think they deserve their choice. I dont think weve got a choice. I think that communities should have a choice. I think the state should have a choice. My choice (to allow students with the HIV virus to attend local rights. The only problem with Utah is that God gave it 'to the Utahns. These are the views of at least a few in Washington D.C. as reported by a member of Representative Wayne Owens staff. I dont fault the Owens staff member for being the bearer of this message. I do fault Owens for accepting the indictment and taking it upon himself to civilize his thick browed statesmen to a standard acceptable to his eastern friends.
