Show 6A Lakeside Review, Wednesday, March 1, 1989 Biodegradable diapers SHARON self-destru- ct past, Lakeside Review columnist ' My daughters friend Sara Bel-- . lum dropped by today. I hadnt seen her for a while. Ever since she started playing bassoon in the high school marching band, shes been too busy practicing her low notes to come by on a regular basis. I cant say Ive missed her. Saras what youd call borderline obnoxious. Shes got more opinions that Dan Rather. I was busy changing the babys diaper this afternoon, when she poked her head in the front door and announced that she wanted to say a short Hello, before she went on downstairs to my daughter's room. My heart sunk clear down to the toes of my left foot. By the timeclock, a short Hello from Sara usually translates into at least 45 minutes of ' Ive been hooked on Huggies, Luvs, and Pampers. Before that it was Kimbies. And now this little -- snip of a girl who probably couldnt tell a cloth diaper from a Rain or Shine conversation, with the first quarter hour reserved for the delivery of either a disconcerting statement or some kind of shocking revelation. The second 15 minutes is then set aside for Saras presentation of statistical evidence supporting the fact that she is right, and you are absolutely, undoubtably wrong, after which she devotes the remaining time to p advice. Ive heard that disposable diapers will soon be a thing of the one-side- d non-sto- . dish towel is telling me disposables are on their way out! To Sara, I said, Is that so? You bet your last Luv, its so. The problem is that these disposables are not really disposable. I mean, you throw them away and everything, but because they dont disintegrate, all that plastic clogs up the landfills. They say if all the disposable diapers used in a single day were stacked up end to end they would reach the moon and diapers. Exactly. And as you can well imagine, the environmentalists of their own about it. Theyve even got a petition going to ban the sale of diapers. All they need is a couple million signatures and zappo, before you can say rubber baby buggy bumper, therell be no more Pampers on the shelf. Im not worried, Sara. As fast as science moves, theyll probably come up with an environmentally safe diaper any day considered biodegradable, a diawhen perd have to it got wet.
