Show P w Lakeside Review, Wednesday, February 8, 1989 Darts hit free throws. Falcons gain inside track SALT LAKE CITY The Davis Darts traveled to Highland High School hoping to gain their first victory in Region 4. The Darts, who have had their share of problems this season, were able to edge out the Rams 5 after Chauney Morgan canned two pressure packed free throws with just 12 seconds remaining Thursday. Ironically it was the free throws, a bugaboo that has taunted Davis all season long that emerged as a friend and not a foe this time around. Davis, despite being down by seven, battled back and out scored the Rams 16-- 8 in the final quarter. The final two points came with just 12 seconds remaining as Chauney Morgan hit the two game winners to give the Darts the victory. It was an ugly game, said Davis Coach Jodi DeRouchey. We were very sluggish and slow which I really didnt expect. We probably played our best game of the year on Tuesday (a 8 loss to Viewmont) and we definitely to top spot CLEARFIELD The heat is on as tournament time is drawing near. With still a couple of weeks of league play remaining the Falcons have the inside track to the the Region title. Clearfield took a giant step in the right direction Friday as they defeated the Layton Lancers in a game that was a lot closer than the score indi1 53-4- 1, cated. Lady Royals su BRIGHAM CITY Normally a trip to Brigham City can be long and tiresome. It can take a toll on teams that make the long journey, but Roy did not show any signs of weariness as the lady Royals handed the Bees a smashing 60-3- 9 defeat Friday. We started off slow once again, said Roy Coach Jack Staker. We have been doing that most of the season. The Royals were in control most of the time, however, they found themselves up by eight 2 at the end of the points, . first quarter. Roy continued to control the game in the second period but 20-1- . . the Royals could not break away from the pesky Bees. Roy led by only eight points at the half. At halftime I told the girls to get a little more serious. We were not playing as well as we should have, said Staker. We came out in the second half and played good. They are a young team and they made some mistakes. We changed defenses bn them and they didnt know how to attack it. In the second half Roy exploited the weaknesses of the young Box Elder team. Roy broke 8 a scoring barrage that finally subdued the scrappy home team. Staker gave the credit to his 17-- guards. Our guard line showed their experience and took over the game and really controlled the action, said Staker. Roy opened the game in the third quarter as they took a 8 45-2- lead. After coming off a tough loss to Clearfield, Staker said the win in Brigham City was really good for the team. It was a good win for us, we are looking forward to our last two games, said Staker. Hopefully we will finish strong and end up high in the final standings. Roy was led in scoring by Car- rie Claxton who led all scorers with 19 points. Teammate Jeni Holbrook also was in double figures as she netted 14 points. Debbie Hadley chipped in eight points for the Royals.
