Show Lakeside Review, Wednesday, February 19, 1986 4C Roy wins first Region Roy captured its event from each region plus the next 12 fastest times throughout the state. For Roy the 200 meter medley relay team placed third and qualified for the state meet. Team members are Mark Willie, Dion Kapetenove, Brian Tuttle and Troy Sandberg. Tuttle placed second in the 200 meter freestyle, with a time that qualified him for state. David DeCoste placed fourth and Scott Bcxel placed sixth in the 200 free. In the 200 meter individual medley Jason Vaughn and Ethan Vaughn placed first and third, respectively and both will compete at state in the event David Skidmore placed first in the freestyle, and will compete at state. Sandberg and Willie placed fourth and fifth. Divers Wade Wright and Scott Peterson placed fifth and sixth in the region competition and will be diving off this week to see if they make the state meet. Jason Vaughn placed first in the 100 meter butterfly and teammate Tuttle placed fourth. Both swimmers will compete in the race at state. In the 100 meter freestyle DeCoste placed third, Skidmore was fourth and Sandberg was sixth. R. J. Peterson placed third in the 500 meter freestyle. Casey Spears placed fifth in the 100 meter backstroke. Kapetenove qualified for state with a third place finish in 100 Re- first-ev- er gion swimming and diving championship when the boys beat out Box Elder Thursday in 1 Brigham City. Layton placed third and Clearfield was fourth. Meanwhile, the Roy girls placed second behind Box Elder, Clearfield placed third and Lay-to- n was fifth. We are very pleased. This is Roys best season ever, collectively, said Roy coach Richard Niel- sen. Whats got Nielsen smiling even more than this seasons victory is the anticipation of next years team. We are just getting started. Roy swimming will go much farther than this. We have some strong swimmers in the ninth grade and some more coming up in the eighth. Next year we should have a better team than we did this year. Although all the qualifying is still has not yet done, a dive-of- f to take place in Salt Lake City, Roy should have 0 swimmers going to the state meet. Laytons coach, Greg Bjork-lunsays his team did about as well as he could have hoped. Our biggest problem is that we have such a small team. Kim Smith set a new region record in diving with 322.1 total points breaking her old region record of 312.0 points. She qualified for state. Darci Smith placed sixth in diving and will likely make the state meet in the dive off, coach Nielsen sid. Jennifer Horne placed first with a new region record in the 100 butterfly and will go to state. Her record time is 105.6. Leslie Neilsen was second in the event and will also go to state. Horne qualified for state with first place in the 100 backstroke, and Harmon placed second and will go to state in the 100 breast stroke. Jensen placed third in the 500 free and the 400 free style relay team of Moser, Darci Smith, a Melissa Petingill and Taga fourth. placed Layton will send its 200 meter medley relay team of Scott Morrow, Aaron Hatch, Scott Green-ma- n and John Bryant to state. The relay won first in region and is ranked sixth in the state. Bryant also qualified for state with a sixth place finish in the 100 meter backstroke, a third Veri-sem- place finish in the 100 meter butterfly and a second place finish in the 200 individual medley. Hatch will go to state with a third place finish in the 100 meter backstroke, and Morrow placed first in the 100 meter breast stroke. Brett Cutler placed third in diving and will dive off this week. Damon Hooker placed fifth in the 100 breast stroke, Terry Home was fifth in the 500 meter freestyle, Morrow was sixth in the 100 meter freestyle and Steve Reid placed sixth in the 500 meter freestyle. For the girls, Chris Wiltberger was first in the region in the 200 individual medley. Leann Hilton was fifth in diving, followed by Vickie Briggs, who was seventh and Tina Zimmerman, who was eighth. All three stand a good chance of making the state meet, Bjorklund said. For Clearfield, Devin McBride placed seventh in the diving while Danny Wilson was ninth. The 200 meter medley, Matt Bowen, David Baugh, Jon Izatt and Mike Roberts, placed third as did the 400 medley relay, Eric Hardman, Baugh, Izatt and Roberts. Susan Young qualified for state with a fifth place finish in the 50 meter freestyle, Laurie Gledhill placed sixth.
