Show umc!iiue review, Wednesday, January Top violinist will perform to Cho-Lian- join chamber orchestra concert Lin g whos recent album won Record of the Year, Cho-Lian- g Lin, will be with the Saint Paul Cham- 1 ber Orchestra when it performs Jan. 27 in Symphony Hall. The performance is sponsored by the office of cultural affairs at Weber State College, and will begin at 8 p.m. in the Salt Lake City hall. , The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra is one of the worlds finest such groups and during the 1985-8- 6 season has tours scheduled for West Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The orchestra, located in the twin cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minn., first started in 1959 when a small group of St. Paul citizens began looking for a conductor to bring together a group of professional musicians. The original group consisted of 24 musicians who perfree-lan- ce formed primarily educational world-famo- Thursday, Friday & Saturday Jan 9th, 10th & 11th five us programs for young musicians and presented new works as well. After a performance in New York, interest grew and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra soon became a full-tigroup. Martino, director of the Weber State cultural affairs office, said that, depending on the number of Ogden patrons, the college is looking to have bus transportation from the college to Symphony Hall at no cost. Lin, 25 and a native of Taiwan, has toured China twice giving recitals and master classes and appeared as soloist with orchestras in Peking, Shanghai, Canton, Sian and Chengdu. Recently he toured Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and New Zea- Gibson, and includes Bachs Suite No. 3 in D, Haydns Violin Concerto No. in C, Mozarts Symphony No. 29 in A, and the Suite from Pulcinella by Stravinsky. In 1959 Sir Alexander became the first Scotsman to be musical director of the Scottish National Orchestra. Last year he celebrated his twenty-fift- h year in that position. After five years with the National Orchestra he had enhanced the prestige of that group nationally and internationally and had also become the principal instigator and founder of the now Scottish Opera. He has traveled extensively in Europe and the United States as well as in Australia and South America. Sir Alexander is well know at the Caramoor Festival in Houston and has performed with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra in Israel. g Lin first arrived in the U.S. at age 15 and international acclaim has grown ever since.
