Review correspondent 'A Popcorn can be an easy and fun thing to give to a neighbor as a Christmas gift. Although it is not known who discovered popcorn, popcorn lovers are grateful for the discovery. An empty ice cream large can, a basket or be festively decorated with an easy popcorn bucket, a a jar may and filled treat. Following are some simple but good popcorn ideas. Toffee Corn 'A cups sugar cup butter or margarine cup light com syrup 2'A quarts popped popcorn 2 cups nuts Cook all ingredients at full boil for about 10 minutes or until the color of coffee with cream in it. Pour over popcorn and nuts and stir. 1 A A Homemaker creates own ingredients com syrup tsp. salt tsp. baking soda tsp. vanilla 2 quarts popped white or low popcorn yel- Preheat oven to 250 F. Melt butter in pan, add brown sugar, corn syrup, and salt. Bring to a boil stirring constantly. Remove from heat and add baking soda and vanilla. Stir until smooth then pour over popcorn in a large bowl. Stir until popcorn is well coated and spread out on a large baking pan. Bake for one hour stirring popcorn every 10 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool. Caramel Popcorn A 2j cup butter cup firmly packed brown Caramel Popcorn Balls 1 pound brown sugar cup butter cup light com syrup can sweetened condensed milk 2'A gallons popped popcorn Cook brown sugar, butter and com syrup until it boils. Place in a shallow dish and marinate six hours or overnight. Bake at 400 degrees for 25 minutes. Baste during baking time. They should be deep brown in color. Pineapple Cheese Ball Combine together 2 pkgs. (8 oz. each) cream cheese cup crushed pineapple, 1 ' ; drained 1 cup chopped pecans Vi cup finely chopped green pepper 2 tsp. onion, finely chopped tsp. seasoned salt Form into either one large ball or several small ones. Roll cheese ball in 1 cup chopped pecans. - Wrap in plastic wrap and chill. Serve with snack crackers, chips, 5 or use to stuff celery. Yield: - 1 Sweetened Condensed Milk 2 Hot Tomato Drink cans Tomato Juice can of 8 juice 3 cans beef boulion broth Onion salt Seasoning salt Mix the above ingredients and keep warm for a party on a cool winter evening. 3 with Mustard Sauce. Drop by small on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in a gas oven at 450 degrees for 10 minutes, then reduce heat to 350 degrees for 10 minutes longer. Yield: 30 puffs. A colorful appetizer with a touch of the Orient. The water chestnuts may be replaced with large chunks of pineapple if thats your preference. Drain - 1 can (8 oz.) whole water chestnuts. Wrap each chestnut with - Vi slice bacon. Secure bacon with toothpick and place wrapped chestnuts in a 9x9x2-inc- h baking dish. Combine and pour over chestnuts - 1 cup barbecue sauce, 1 cup honey. Bake uncovered in a gas oven at 400 minutes or degrees F. for 5 until bacon is golden brown. Yield: 0 appetizers. 30-3- 15-2- Cheesey Crab Rolls Cocktail Reuben Sandwich Hot bubbly cheese, green onions, peppers and crab are mixed together to create this tantalizing appetizer. Combine in medium size mixing bowl - 2 cups grated cheddar can (6 to 7 oz.) crab cheese, Vi meat, cup mayonnaise, 5 green onions, chopped, Vi cup minced A tangy, open-face- version of d the traditional reuben sandwich. Spread sliced party rye bread with - 1 tsp. thousand island salad dressing. Top each with thin slice of corned beef, sauerkraut, drained and snipped slice of process Swiss cheese. Broil 3 min- - 1 cup very hot water cups sugar 'A cup margarine 4 cups instant powdered dry milk or 2 cups powdered milk Blend in blender. This can be used the same as commercial condensed milk in recipes. It will keep six months in the refrigerator. l'A cups equals one can of commercial condensed milk. 1 Serves 20. 1 to purchase metal salt shakers, spray paint them, tole paint or put an applique on the container then place a small plastic bag with homemade seasoned salt in the container and tie the recipe on the handle. The mother of six finds it more economical to prepare her own frequently used ingredients at home. She makes her own sweetened condensed milk which may be kept in the refrigerator for six months. She also makes her own mayonnaise, powdered sugar and brown sugar. Along with sharing her recipes with our readers, she offers some fun and different gift ideas for neighbors and friends. As a diversion from sweets during the holidays, fill a festive seasonal glass with a homemade cheese spread. Place a plastic knife in the center and wrap in plastic wrap pulled up around the jar. Versatile enough to serve hot or cold. Mix together 1 quart boiling water 5 cups sugar 1 can (6 oz.) orange juice Juice of 3 lemons 1 oz. (2 T.) citric acid 1 Vi T. vanilla 1 'A T. almond extract Add 7 quarts water. Serve hot 0 8oz. servor cold. Yield: 35-4- ings. Hot Buttered Lemonade A delightful treat on a cold winter night. Dont forget the butter, the extra calories are worth it. In saucepan, combine: 4 Vi cups boiling water 3A cup fresh lemon juice (3-- 4 lemons) 3A cup sugar I Vi tsp. grated lemon peel Cook, stirring occasionally, until heated through. Pour into mugs; top each with 1 tsp. butter. Serve with cinnamon stick stirrers. Yield: 6 servings. A 1 oil slowly. Cheese Spread 2 8oz. cream cheese 1 jar old English cheese spread 1 T. dried minced onion 2 T. parsley cup walnuts Powdered Sugar cup granulated sugar cornstarch Blend high speed in the blender for 5 minutes. 1 2 T. Brown Sugar 1 1 Cherry Chocolates 3 cups sugar cup marachino cherry juice cup light corn syrup 1 cup whipping cream Dash of salt 2 T. butter tsp. almond extract Heat cream, syrup, juice, butter and bring to a boil. Add sugar and salt bring back to a boil and turn down heat. Cook to 230 degrees let cool. When cooled add almond extract. After completely cool beat till it loses its gloss. Turn out on marble slab and knead. Wrap around cherry and dip in chocolate. 'A 'A 1 Almond Roche 1 lb. butter 6 T. corn syrup 2'A cups sugar 2 T. water Melt butter, add syrup, sugar, water and cook slowly. Stir once in a while cooking to hard crack stage. Pour on buttered pan. Wipe with towel when cool and pour melted chocolate with chopped on nuts. Rocky Road Candy 15 large marshmallows cut in fourths or use small ones (not jet puffed ones) Put in pan and freeze. 1 12oz pkg. chocolate chips 'A lb. butter Cut butter in small pieces and place in bowl with chocolate chips. Combine and boil for 5 minutes or more: 4 cups sugar can milk 20 large marshmallows. Remove from heat and add to butter and chocolate chips. Stir until thick, add 1 tsp. vanilla and 2 cups chopped nuts. Fold in frozen marshmallows and pour.into buttered pan. Peanut Butter Bonbons . 2 cups peanut butter or marga- cup salt tsp. parsley flakes tsp. pepper ch 20-2- Who said BERNINA Has to bo expensive? Combine in medium mixing bowl: pkgs. (6 oz. each) corned beef, finely chopped 2 pkgs. (8 oz. each) cream cheese, softened. 2 T. minced onion 2 T. Worcestershire sauce 2 tsp. Accent Shape mixture into a ball.
