Show Lakeside Review, Wednesday, Docember 18, 1985 Give that $ Before you buy that $100 toy for your child for Christmas you may want to take a test to see if youre wasting your money, Brenda Wilson, of Clinton and a student instructor in the day care center at Weber State College, has developed an evalua- - tion that rates toys in terms of their benefits for children, and she said that fancy, expensive toys are not always a good buy. A motorized vehicle for children, for example, may sound fun, but many children would get more enjoyment from an empty bucket. It doesnt have to cost a lot to be a oy a test' before good toy, said Ms. Wilson. The idea is to look at a number of different toys. Ms. Wilson said that the best toys teach children some skill or action, and the test is divided into categories that rate the playthings in those areas. The categories include social, emotion, physical, intel- - lectual, moral and creativity with an additional section called, Am I getting the most for my money, or in other words, will the child play with it after Christmas day. A lot of parents are not aware of the importance of toys, she said. Play is the work of the child. Its a way the child creates the world and discovers himself. I once tried rooting an avocado pit in a water glass, but the only thing that ever grew was algae on top of the water. Even artificial foliage has trouble surviving in my household. A once beautiful silk floral arrangement now hangs rather bedrag-gledl- y from a hook in my living room ceiling. It that a geranium? Marti asked during a recent visit to my home.
