At North Davis, a math teacher by the name of Nolan Fawcett is coaching students enrolled in a math counts program. Its a third-yeprogram in which students compete regionwide in math skills, said Fawar cett. If the students do well as a team, or as individuals, they have a chance to compete statewide. They could go as far as the nationals, which will be held in Washington D.C., he said. The program is for seventh and eighth graders. Its used to generate interest in math skills, he explained. North Davis Junior High competes in the Northwest region, Fawcett said. The school is the County that has competed in the math counts program for the past three years. There are three different methods of testing used in competition. The first method is a math test with different problem combinations. The students are given an hour to complete as many questions as possible. The second method is power drills. The students in this session work as a team to solve the problems. They are given 10 time problems, with a limit. The third method involves students doing two problems, with two minutes to complete each, one. The students are given five continuous sessions of this drill. No calculators, no multiple choice. Just precision, Fawcett said. te j Clearfield to hold Christmas Dance 10 Clearfield CLEARFIELD Christannual its will hold High 7 in the Dec. on Dance mas Students enrolled in a math counts" promath really does count, with the help of will dance The school gym. boys teacher Nolan Fawcett, middle. gram at North Davis Junior High discover casual-beis 8 Dress begin at p.m. dress. Whole family gets a jellybean after hard letters like J, K, Q, X, and Z! Special to the Lakeside Review Dear Readers, Here are some fun, educational ideas for all the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday travelers with young children! If you can keep the older kids from saying Eehhww! Gross! as you describe each game, the little ones will think all this is great fun especially if they get reactions like, Wow! Youre smart! Parents write a few simple problems for each child to do. Small children could work on plus 1, 1 plus 0, etc. Ages 5 could do 4 plus 3, 5 minus 2, etc. Kids really good at single problems can easily do huge problems with no borrowing like 97,354 minus 52,130. Write all problems vertically and for huge problems, SMARTIES: 4-- 1 JELLYBEAN WORD FIND: Locate entire words (exit, speed, market, etc.) Select words appropriate to travel location highways will have a different vocabulary than Main Street, USA! A jellybean could be given for each correct answer ( maybe three jellybeans for the hard problems!). ALPHABET GAME: This is an old standard, but it is an excellent game for rapid letter recognition. Locate letter of the alphabet (in order) from any source outside SCAN THE PAPER: This is an excellent way to encourage kids to read and enjoy newspapers. This game can be adapted many First one to cirways. Words cle the word can five times is the winner (keep words relatively simple; little children have not yet learned how to scan quickly). Even little ones can do this; they could look for the word I if nothing else! When the first one finds all 26 letters, the whole family stops for ice cream!
