They smoothed out the lumps in their offense, got anything but sweet on defense and then rolled to their final preseason victory over Clearfield 44-Going into the game the Falcons thought they had the recipe for success, but Davis slammed the oven door and the cake fell 7. . flat. Clearfield was not able to capitalize on a single Davis turnover. In the first half, when the game was still within reach, the Darts coughed up four fumbles but the Falcons could get only one first down out of the bunch. I think maybe were overpre-- j pared and overanxious and want-- 1 ed it just a little too much. We didnt do the things we needed to do to win which are block and tackle," Clearfield coach Brent Hancock said. I was hoping Davis was a phenomenal team and we were just a good one, but after looking at the films I think Davis is a very good team and we played bad, he ad- - t ded. , , Also, if I had it to do over again I wouldnt be so conservative on play selection early in the game. We played tight and we just didnt get the first downs we needed to, Hancock said. The Falcons went into the locker room at halftime down 17-- 0 and with nothing to show for all the Davis turnovers. The game was put out of reach late in the third quarter when Davis defensive back Greg Willard intercepted a Falcon pass and returned it to the Davis 47 the Darts then marched downfield, facemask penaided by a alty, scoring just five plays later. 15-ya- rd The Falcons first series of the quarter was cut short by the Davis defense, complete with injuries to running backs Pepo Olivas and Craig Carter. Carter later returned to the game, but Olivas may be out for the season. After the Darts stopped Clearfield on downs early in the third quarter they put together a 55-ya- rd drive that sig- naled the beginning of the end for the Falcons. Davis coach Jim Dickson was obviously pleased with the win, but was a little reluctant to show it after some weekend rumors made their way back to him. We played well, but Im a little scared to say anything about the game. Ive been getting stories that some people have been saying that we ran up the score and rubbed it in their noses, Davis coach Jim Dickson said. I dont want to sound like Im defending myself, because I dont think I need to. Juniors (reserve juniors to be more precise) scored our last three touchdowns, Dickson said. It was just one of those games where we got things rolling and Clearfield struggled. I cant put my reserves in there and tell them not to do their best. Those kids have been sitting on the bench and they want to crack the starting lineup. Theyre all fired up to show what they can do, and, of course, by late in the game Clearfields players were a little bit down, Dickson said. Hancock seemed satisfied that the lopsided score was not a snub by the Davis coaching staff. Davis is a very good football team. Theyre hard to prepare for and they know how to win. Thats why some of the teams around here stopped playing them in preseason. But then preseason is to learn and I think we have learned from the experience. We know we are good enough to play with anybody in our league, and this week thats what weve got to go out and do. Willard and Blake Hart, playing in his first contest this year because of a broken hand he suffered in the second practice of the season, were team leaders on defense for the game, Dickson said. ONCE DAVIS got going, Clearfield found it impossible to catch up. The Darts remain unbeaten going into league play. touchdown pass to Willard. Reserve wingback Sam Gardiner also had a productive night, Quarterback Clay Singley also five pf eight had a good night 113 for passes yards and one carrying the ball just three times but racking up 42 yards and two touchdowns. Kicker Kyle Knowles hit four of four PATs and added a 35 yard field goal for the Darts. Friday the 13th Proves Unlucky For Roy Football Team LYNN AVERETT Review Correspondent It was Friday the 13th. ROY It was lucky for the Bountiful Braves, but unlucky for the Royals of Roy, who scored 10 points to Bountifuls 21. , The Royals hosted the Braves in the final game for both teams. Roy went into the contest in two outings, and Bountiful came to the game with a record following an upset at the hands of a strong Weber club. Both squads wanted to prove that they are forces to be reckoned with in their respective repre-seas- un-bcat- ed -1 making it 10--0 for Roy. Unfortunately, the Royal offense would score no more on this night. But the Braves would find the end zone three times to take home the victory over a good Royal club. We were able to stop them (Bountiful) for most of the first half, but we just let it get away from us. Thompson said, They have a fine quarterback (Joey Covey) and he was hard to stop. Thompson added. Roy had an opportunity to get back into the game with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. 0 and The score was Bountiful seemed to get a little greedy as they went to the air. Braves quarterback Joey Covey, completed a ten yard pass, he then threw for an incomplete pass. On third and ten, Covey threw deep to tight end Chad Rigby, but Roy defensive back Darren Boyer stepped in front of Rigby for the interception returning it to the Bountiful 45. 21-1- gions. It just wasnt meant to be. We made some mistakes and Bountiful took advantage of them." said Roy coach Fred Thompson. The Royals drew first blood by taking the opening kickoff up field goal by field for a Gary King. Roys next possession was im. 41-ya- rd pressive. On the third play of the series, senior quarterback Bobby Harris dropped back to pass. The Royal offensive line gave Harris all the time he needed to find senior Dave Tafoya getting behind the Braves secondary on an out pattern. Harris hit Tafoya on the run scorwhich resutlcd in a ing strike. Kings PAT was good 66-ya- rd However, the Royals offense was able to fhuster only ten yards and an attempted field goal went wide left. Its hard for a high school student to play both ways. You cant play defense and expend that much effort in stopping a good team and then turn around and try to move the ball up field. said Thompson. The Braves ran out and in so doing, took away the hopes of Roy going undefeated in the-cloc- pre-seaso- n. Our biggest problem was on defense, and especially our secondary. They had been making some good tackles in the past two games, but they missed a lot of easy tackles in this one. said Thompson. We did, however, get some excellent play from linebackers Darin Lay and Shane Opheikens. And we will work on the secondary, he added. Roy opens up its region play against Clearfield at home Friday night Both teams are coming into the game with loses to Region 4 opponents, and it should be a good game as both want to rebound and get into the win column. Clearfield is always tough. Theyre big and strong, but I think well be able to stay with them if we dont make any major mistakes. Thompson said. The Royals appear to be quicker than the Falcons, but if Clearfield gets its ground game going it may be hard for Roy to stop the bigger Falcons. They may be big, but our speed will help us, Thompson said. It should be a good game, because they always play us well. We win some and they win some. Thompson said.
