In Davis County, also, students are reporting a far higher incidence of use of smokeless tobacco than ever before. The continued and prolonged use of this form of tobacco is posing a real danger to the health of young users and the Davis County School District should be commended for its stand in enforcing restrictions on its use on school grounds and punishments for students found using the substances. Young athletes in particular often find chewing tobacco appealing, since its effects are not as noticeable in reducing lung capacity when compared to smoking. However, the dangers to health which accompany continued use of smokeless tobacco are very real. It has been estimated by physicians groups that use of smokeless tobacco products increases fourfold the risk of contracting cancer of the mouth and throat. Surgery for mouth and throat cancers can leave the victim without parts of his or her jaw and face. The cancer contracted initially in the mouth area can spread to other parts of the body and can be fatal. Students should be educated concerning the dangers of smokeless tobacco. During a interview recent conducted by the Lakeside Review with a number of area residents, the attitude toward chewing tobacco expressed by at least one young man was one of casual indifference. A lot of kids chew it, the young man said. Its not as bad as other drugs where they get all lifted up on it. It doesnt have the effect other drugs have. Most young people have a feeling of invincibility. They refuse to believe they can become addicted to smokeless tobacco and they dont want to think of the possibilities of contracting serious diseases. But, they must be convinced. It is illegal to sell tobacco in any form to persons under the age of 19, yet the Davis County Health Department feels enough of the products are being sold to minors that it decided to send a letter to Many students and most parents find the habit of chewing tobacco disgusting. joint effort is needed TERMS OF SALE (FINANCING AVAILABLE) down 11 5 $115 10 Interest MONTHLY PAYMENT down 10 Interest $100 MONTHLY PAYMENT 15 down 9 $85 Interest MONTHLY PAYMENT Contract Balance Due June 1, 1987 Cash Discount: 5 for at cash purchases FOR DETAILS CONTACT: THE REAL ESTATE EXCHANGE 621-592- GARY IVERSON 479-400- 0 or 3 BLAINE SYL VESTER by the health department, school administrators and parents to curb the rising use of smokeless tobacco. The school districts action in including smokeless tobacco on lists of drugs which are prohibited on campuses in the county is one step in the right direction.
