Show ton Page 4A Lakeside Review Wednesday, August 14, 1985 Editorial ; Womans In Efforts Davis Worth Recognition The question of whether a son or daughter is using drugs is one sometimes avoided by parents, perhaps because the mere thought is unpleasant. But one area mother found herself in this situation, asked the question and then tried to cope with the answer - her son was chemi-call- y dependent. The wrenching pain and 'helpless sense of frustration are feelings known only to those who watch someone close to them wither from effects of drugs. Through this mother's persevering efforts, Davis now boasts the first organized county drug abuse task force in Utah - formally called the Davis County Anti-Dru- g Youth Drug and Alcohol Investigative Task Force. The issue of drug abuse and youths is one of todays hottest issues, and Pat Hartman deserves recognition for her dedication and work in making the area a better place for youths. The problem of the availability of drugs in todays schools or on the streets and playgrounds cannot be emphasized enough. The marijuana, cocaine and alcohol are there. So arc the people who are willing to sell it to your children. The atmosphere at home does not always play into the picture, since peer pressure is often quoted as a reason many youths begin experimenting with drugs and alcohol. A series of meetings held this month and planned for September and October, open to the public, will explore several issues the task force is primarily concerned about: state laws dealing with drug abuse and how or why they may need to be amended; the availability of state housing for the drug dependent; and ways to help the abusers and their families. We urge the public to become involved in efforts to curb drug and alcohol abuse among todays young. If one young life can be saved, this mothers monumental efforts will be crowned with achievement. Letter to the Editor Vote in Bond issue for Pool ; : Review Editor: I; I am writing in regards to the p lipcoming Layton City swimming pool bond election. As a past manager of the exist-m- g pool, I feel that a new swim-- ; ming facility for the Layton community is a must. The pres- ent facility is entirely inadequate for the demand that is placed up-- l on it and has been for a number ; of years. With the existing population I and its projected growth in the I upcoming years the proposed swimming pool would be benefi- -' ckjl not only for Layton but for I tlie surrounding communities as - ! r ! - well. . ;The pool as it exists today is deamed inadequate in the follow- irlg areas: pool size, dressing facil- ities, shower area, locker rentals ' and just general conditions of the , pool itself is and has been show- - its ing age for several years now. Well, there is a way you dont have to wonder any more about 'building the right leadership. Consider this: The answers to everything you want to know are decided by people - people who are elected to government positions at one level or another. If you know who those people are, what they in and what decisions they ; probably will make when faced ,with the. issues you care about, then you dont have to wonder or worry anymore. And the way to know is to Carefully select candidates who $hare your views and work to get them elected. i Thats why more than 40 years :ago, a group of concerned Ameri- - i I Parents . Get Active in U.S Womens Organization Lay-to- 1 Your largest constituency in this country, parents, are also the ones that are most flagrantly discriminated against. Why is this? Primarily, the reason is that parents are not organized and do not present a united lobbying front. I would urge all parents to join some family organization to make their voice more effective in Washington. One of the biggest issues that faces society today is how to educate our children how can we as parents get an equal share of the tax dollar to educate our children in the school of our choice. The primary right to educate resides with parents. This is a natural right bestowed on parents by the Creator and no constitution or government can abrogate that right. After all, who educated children before there was a formal school? Parents. Yet, parents that send their children to a private school as weil as contribute to the support of public schools dont get an equal share of the educational pc . When parent's gi ievances are satisfied, you wont have any more bound- flak about church-stat- e articularly J tics. With the present alignment of the U.S. Supreme Court we still cant look forward to an equitable share of the tax dollar. But they wont be there forever and now is the time for us to put pressure on legislators and judges for just laws and favorable decisions. Now is the time to write our representatives and senators to vote against all civil rights bills that dont have riders on them that assert and protect the civil rights of parents - particularly to grant to parents their fair share of the tax dollar to educate their children in the school of their choice. Let them know that if they dont support us on this issue, we wont support them at election time. Corneluis U. Morgan Baltimore, Md.
