If you plan to take foreign-mad- e personal articles with you (watches and cameras, for example), Consider getting a certificate of registration from the Customs office nearest you. Have your passpdrt ready when you go through immigration and customs,. Upon you i return, pack separately the articles you have acquired abroad, if possible, and have your receipts handy in the event you need to support your declaration. If you are returning to the U.S. by car from Mexico or Canada, have your vehicle registra-ftio- n certificate handy. Foreign Currency Before departing the U.S,, purchase small amounts of foreign currency to use for buses, taxis, phone calls, tips and other incidentals.' Once you have arrived at your destination, you can purchase currency from banks, foreign exchange firms or at foreign exchange offices at In- -, ' temational airports. General Tips Make sure your medical and travel accident insurance policies provide adequate protection ' .for you and your family while traveling outside the United States, r Antonia or Rome, but the test roll will be like a dress rehearsal. The traveling photographers basic equipment can include: a camera, lens cap, camera strap, camera bag that is sturdy, compact and light, an extra set of batteries, a skylight filter, a small tripod with a cable shutter release, and a small flash for indoor or low light shots. e labels to help in identifying your rolls of film as to sites and dates and plastic bags to store film and protect the camera from rain or dust are also Pressure-sensitiv- helpful while traveling. Your Film There are many types of film available, but a photographer must first decide whether to shoot in black and white or color. Most travelers, of course, will opt for color as the richest medium for their memories. Tri X ASA 400 is the best black and white film. The ASA number indicates the speed of the film. By using faster film, a photographer can shoot at higher shutter speeds us- ing less light. Color film is more complicated and sensitive. It is available in two types: slide and print film. Most people shoot print film even though it is more expensive. The preferred economical slide film is ASA 64 because it is a medium-speed film that has the best color rendition. Expect to shoot one or two rolls of film per day. Film is not always available overseas and it is usually expensive, so be sure to bring enough on your trip. Do not keep color film in the camera too long. It is more sensitive than black and white film and tends to spill. Keep all film the frame to show the contrast. Airport signs, street signs, milestones and national boundary signs help to tell the story of your trip better. Also remember that on a trip it is rarely possible to return to a particular site. Dont plan to come back later and risk missing out on a great shot. And poor weather need not inhibit your shooting either. Rain, snow, fog, heavy clouds and strong winds can provide an exciting backdrop for your pictures--an- d they are part of your personal experience away from intense store it in your cars glove compartment or trunk. Never keep film in your baggage and, if possiat ble, avoid having film airports. Carry your exposed and d unexposed film in a special in bag (available photo supply store?) or have it examined by hand. Your Photographs Before you start taking photographs, educate yourself about the place you will be visiting. Check with your travel agent for information about your destination. Research the area through guidebooks and photography books that show the areas highlights. Some suggestions of subjects that provide the greatest interest include: local dress; the local people; architecture; water scenes, including canals, rivers, seaside views and fountains; your fellow travelers at scenes of interest; interesting geographic features such as canyons and mountain peaks. Remember when shooting huge objects, try to include a person in heat--do- nt lead-line- as well. Try to create a photo narrativeyour pictures with a story in mind. And dont forget to include a few humorous shots. These simple hints provide only a beginning to your adventures in travel photography. Remember the memories of a wonderful trip are always enhanced by good photographs. Photographs also help you share your traveling experiences with others. -shoot .
