Literature is very effective. It opens the communication processes. A child doesnt know sometimes what questions to ask, said Jennifer Miller, 2160 S. Orchard in Bountiful. Parents sometimes talk to children in adult language and dont get down to their level. The books put the information in simple form. We adults sometimes skip the little facts, said Mrs. Miller. Sometimes it is more valuable to have someone other than mom always saying it. Reading with the child with this kind of literature opens up the parentchild relationship and opens the communication channels, said Mary Hughes, PERC ple ductive. Parents and children learn involvement and listening skills, said Mrs. Hughes. Other books include A Terrible Thing Happened At Our House Today: Mother Went To Work, or Divorce is a Growing Up Problem, or activities for children when they are not well. The library has books for just about every specific problem a family could encounter. Our books are carefully chosen. They deal with difficult situations, new experiences, crisis situations such as death, divorce; they help children formulate value systems; gain a healthy self esteem; and gain self understanding and understanding of others, said director. Youngsters who are experiencdifficult situations can identithrough reading, with other children who are encountering and solving similar problems, said Mrs. Hughes. They see hope for themselves as well as learn new problem solving and ing fy, coping skills. When the parent and child are reading together, it is a time to sit close and put your arm around the child and talk about their worries, open avenues of communication and just spend time together," said Jan Newton, librarianreceptionist. The books make me feel good about my role as a parent and makes my efforts more effective. It has always been amazing to me that we can get into space and to the moon we can do everything, but get along with each other, said Mrs. Hughes. I teach the personal interaction skills to my children. If they want to be great at the piano or in math, I can get them a teacher, but I have to provide them with the personal relationship skills to deal with others, said Mrs. Miller.
