And some people make it easy for their pets. They just sign a statement at an animal control shelter that the animal must be destroyed. The order has to be followed. Lives of entire families of cats and dogs are ended this way. There are the harder ways of dying, too. Any Davis County animal con trol officer can tell a few stories about cats found impaled on the top of chain link fence and left to die. A few were still alive when someone arrived on the scene. Some dogs or cats get their bellies cut open by a knife and are found that way. Cars and trucks take care of some of the countys cat and dog population. Hundreds are picked up or scraped off the roads each dogs. 7,000 animals are into the county shelter a brought year. Of the 7,000 cats and dogs, about a thousand are adopted. Some are traced back to owners through the shelters lost and found program. But the remaining 6,000 are put to sleep. The cat and dog population in the county is increasing, not decreasing. One female dog, not neutered, can have one to two litters of puppies a year, said Glen Taylor, the interim director of the county animal control shelter. An average litter is about six .puppies. In five years, with two litters of puppies a year, and each of her offspring multiplying at an average rate, 7,000 dogs will be bom. Taylor said prevention of the needless loss of animal life lies with animal owners. Neutering of pets would greatly reduce the increasing numbers of animals. Responsible animal ownership is the only answer to the growing problem, he said. Until pet owners begin caring enough to get animals neutered, thousands more will die each year, he said. year.
