Show 2B Thin Obsession Lakeside Review North, Wednesday, Feb. 1, 1984 Herbs May Harm Disorders Causes Unorthodox Cures' Could Be Lethal Unorthodox cures for illnesses like diabetes and cancer offered by people outside medical channels are generally useless and can be lethal, according to Frank Robles of Salt Lake City and Dr. Gale Keyes of Ogden. Robles, a pharmacist who has been a diabetic for 25 years, spoke to a group of diabetics at and had success, but this docs cause diabetes," he said. Dr, Keyfcs said the rapid progress and success of chemotherapy treatment for cancer victims has eliminated many unorthodox kinds of treatments. He said some of his patients take vitamin A supplements in addition to prescribed chemotherapy. I dont discourage this, he said. In fact, I think there may be something to it. He explained that doses of vitamin A have been proven to aid in the rapid maturation of cells, which prevents them from dividing. He added that vitamin A treatments are being considered for some types of lung cancer victims. Patients who travel outside the country for Laetrile treatments, which are not available here, are putting themselves in risk, Dr. Keyes said. Laetrile not only doesnt cure cancer, he said, it can kill people. He explained that Laetrile, an extract from pits of bitter apricots, contain cyanide. Large doses can be lethal, he said, especially in youngsters. Dr. Keyes said that many patients who receive Laetrile treatments are given chemotherapy along with it, the same type available in the United States, but this fact is not advertised, he said. Cabin Fever Blues ' Cold, Foggy Days Lower Moods Its tough believing there is a silver lining behind gray, winter clouds. These long days of fog and cold temperatures can bring on emotional depression and sometimes result in crisis, even violence in families, according to Rod Fifield, an Ogden social sameness notony and there are only five hours of sunlight in a day. Then the temperaFifield says people in this area tures average about 50 or 60 are generally outdoors-oriente- d degrees below zero, not counting and may find it difficult to put the wind chill factor. Or sometimes the patient is referred to psychiatric services on an outpatient basis, he said. Some'times referrals are made to agencies outside the hospital like Weber County Mental Health. Coping with and beating the blues caused by confining winter weather can sometimes be accomplished on a short term basis with help from medication. Antidepressants work but they dont solve the problem, Fifield said. He said patients in crisis who are taking frustrations out by physically abusing their children or spouses, need help in coping and handling stress. Positive parenting classes may be advised or marriage counseling might be helpful, Fifield said. For most people making your self vomit is not too appealing, but for those with eating disorders it is, as one psychologist put it, a nice way to have your cake and eat it too." Bulimia, along with its sister disease anorexia nervosa, have been a societal problem for many years. The Romans were among the first credited with the disorder. People at that time would eat large meals three or four times a day and then use a feather to induce vomiting. The 17th century produced the first reported case of an eating disorder, but since then, said Dr. Peggy Hatch, "theres been a ton of it. Dr. Hatch, a psychologist at the Weber State College counseling center, along with McKay-De- e Hospital Psychologist Dr. Cheryl Bupp, recently presented a lecture at WSC on eating disorders. They told an audience of mostly women that the current a flood of information about and bulimia have helped bring some people into counseling centers for help, but in many cases has provided teenagers with how to information. Dr. Hatch said that societys obsession with thinness has led to an epidemic of eating disanex-ori- orders. Playboy foldouts are becom- ing slimmer and slimmer and Miss America contestants have a steady average weight drop each year. This years winner weighed less than 86.4 percent of normal weight. Thats low, said Dr. Hatch. She continued, Some women even teach their daughter to use annorexia or bulimia as a way of think they are grossly overweight even when they are emaciated, she said. Dr. Bupp said, People with didieting disorders are excellent eters. Its almost as if they have gotten too good at it. Dr. Hatch said that anorexics are usually high achievers, moral, perfectionists, timid and easi- ly influences. They also-' experience a great deal of emotional isolation, the only way they feel they can be in control is with their eating." Dr. Hatch said that anorexics will spend a great deal of time thinking about what they will not eat while bulimics, on the other hand, spend much of their day planning and executing eating binges where they will consume up to 20,000 calories four or five times daily. Then vomit ,or use laxatives, diuretics or mas to get rid of the food. She said, The person will become enormously hungry, binge, vomit and then be hungry again. Its a vicious cycle. And for most bulimics the enjoyment of food and of eating has disappeared. It becomes something they feel they have to do,. Dr. Hatch said. Dr. Bupp added, Bulimics are not social. It takes a lot of time to plan a binge and arrange an atmosphere where they can take laxatives or use a finger or toothbrush (to induce vomiti. ng). With anorexia and bulimia stress and depression seem to be both the cause and the psychological result. In many cases family obesity, preoccupation with weight or misconceptions about growing older seem to weight control. in the dea The two psychologists said play significant part disorders. of eating that 95 percent of the people velopment In bulimic families the eating who have anorexia are women is often directly related disorder with 80 to 90 percent of bulimfathers the to hostility and frusics being female.
