Review Correspondent The Laytons LAYTON Museum Board received a pleas-tasurprise last week when, instead of taking a $19,000 payment for the museum, the city fathers decided to remove the debt from the board and return the payment for urther museum development. Oma Wilcox, chairman of the museum board, approached the city with the $19,000 with the hope that the city would cancel the interest, which amounted to nearly $16,000. The $19,000 came from fundraisers and a $10,000 private donation. When the city first formed a ' board to look into the possibility of building a museum to house local artifacts and present a cultural and economic history of the city, the mayor and city' council offered to provide the property if such a facility could be built. A $55,000 grant from the Bicentennial Committee brought some money into the etty for construction but it wasnfnearly enough to complete the building, according to Mrs. Wilcox. For the past several years many different fundraisers have helped pay for the museum, but at one point money had to be borrowed from a local bank to pay some of the construction costs.' After that the board approached the City to ask for a loan to pay back the money and finish the museum. The city did lend the board the money after board members personally guar- -' nt Through continued fundraisers the indebtedness to the city was reduced to 19,000, Jiot including the interest. The issue of whether or not to forgive the board the interest or even to, cancel the entire debt has been considered by the city council for several weeks.
