Show SOME suggestions ABOUT SILOS in some localities many new silos havo have been erected in the past lew few months these silos aro are going to be great great money savers this winter for hay is going to eq unusually high the high price ot of hay in tact fact during the present feeding season will stimulate interest in tho the silo a and n d the coming season will see an unusual number of 0 new silos erected probably during tho the winter season reason when other work is slack some farmers farmers will haul gravel and sand to be used later la in silo building where this Is tile tho case the material should be kept in a compact pile not be permitted to spread out in such a way that when it la Is used it will earry carry rubbish and dirt tor for one of the essentials in good silo construction is clean sand and gravel I 1 amp am of course assuming that everyone now Is converted to the concrete silo for wall utah valleys good cement concrete cannot be made from rubbish sand that Is loamy should not be used and proper proportions of gravel and sand are necessary in measurement one of cement two ot of sand and four of gravel are the proper proportions tor for best beat results good reinforcing is necessary and the reinforcing should be properly placed the best reinforcing is the diamond mesh concrete reinforcing material that is th the 0 woven wire that is put out by the large wire compan companies ies I 1 to meet the requirement of cement concrete work sometimes when tills this material either tile the fencing or the diamond mesh rein forchi is used it should be placed near the outside of the wall this is important in order to get the greatest strength and best value out of the reinforcing yet it Is often hurriedly placed and little attention being given tile the result is that the reinforcing is crowded to the inside of the wall where it has its least value as a strengthening factor in the wall tho the reinforcing should be well fastened at the ilia ends and where a continuous door is used as it most often Is in utah silos the reinforcing in should bp bi wrapped well around the pipe that is pla placed ced a few inches back in the walls from tile the door jamb and this pipe should be at least 1 14 1 4 inches in diameter the steps that form the bond across tho doorway should not be shaped on a curve they should be on a straight line rom pipe to pipe sometimes ah lt has happened that these steps have been cured to give a better toe told but when the tremendous lateral pressure cornea comes right reinforcing inside the door about five caps after filli la is tills this curve in the steps will be tile the weakest place in ili the whole circumference of the silo and tile the result will vill be possibly a straightening of the bacud in the step which will throw an undue leverage on cm the concrete in the edgo edge of the doorway and a cracking brackin g and scattering of the concrete is 15 almost sure to result especially if every care has not been taken to keep the door jamb properly reinforced and tamped camped with tile the very cleanest of material entering into the concrete ml mix when tile the pipe I 1 have mentioned that is used tor for up jambs cambs is too small then we do not get the strength that Is required to properly stif stiffen feri this part of tho the wall the above are just a few items that are important in silo construction st now there are a few things to be bourn aburn in mind at filling time where the weather will permit it is best to let the corn come to early maturity so that the kernels of the corn will be airey fairly airly well glazed then keep the silage evenly spread as tilling filling progresses and tramped at the edges tile tho heavier part of the silage will naturally fall to tho the center arid and without sonio some attention there would follow a slack fill at the edges of the silo some kind of a distributor by which the silage silage can lie bi directed to different parts of 0 the silo is a great labor saver and is well worth a reasonable cost should the silage betho dry water must be added and especial care given to packing or tramping while filling it Is difficult to give a definite rule as to just when corn will be ready to go into the silo for there is such a difference in ili soils and the amount of moisture in ili tile the soil to a great extent governs the amount of moisture in the silage crops the same variety of corn for instance ins taace when planted on an a gravelly bench will need a little different handling than when planted two miles distant in a loamy soil sell with clay tor a subsoil under these conditions the plant will carry quite different amounts ot of moisture as maturity approaches pro aches and a little judgment is necessary as to when is the best time for fo filling it is best to got get tile the corn I 1 nto into the silo before it to la frosted when it is possible but bilt when other work will not permit of this being done do not think that tho the crop is ruined if frost gets it but get it iahn an as soon as possible and add water to takei take the place of tho the moisture that escapes anen frost has shattered ehatt ered tho the leaves then plan a little better next nest season den ben R eldredge in utah farmer |
