James L Schmidt Kaysville Is nepotism a problem with dispatcher? Ogden City almost lost one of their policemen a few weeks ago but I wonder if city management really knows how close or whether they support the type personnel system that allows the real tragedy of this situation to continue The tragedy I refer to is the fire dispatcher who is as responsible for the incident culminating the way it did as the situation itself The reason she was hired? This young woman is the daughter of a fire department battalion chief and also the daughter of the city manager’s secretary On the day and time of the shooting this young woman was in the dispatch office answering phone calls and dispatching calls In addition to juggling phone calls from the neighbors at the upcoming scene of the shooting she was talking to her boyfriend call and who needed a wake-u- another of her friends who just wanted to talk to her She could have very easily gotten the officer killed had another dispatcher in the office not recognized what was going on and taken over the situation The result of this incident? The supervisor of the dispatchers who is a fireman feels Officer Gallegos should have been more careful and took no meaningful reprimand toward his dispatcher My question Ogden City is the nepotism of your employees more important than human life? Or is it because the officer’s name is Gallegos and he only helps your EED (Equal Employment Opportunity) posture so incidents that happen to him don’t get the same personal attention as the daughter of two of your other employees? Story viewed as slanted This is the first time I have found it necessary to make a written response to an article published in the As I read the account as stated in the March 5 issue by David Hackett I was appalled by the description of the actions allegedly taken by Kaysville Police Officer Harold Burner without an accurate assessment being made of the incidents that took place on that particular evening The description of the actions supposedly taken by Officer Burner are completely out of his character I have known him for several years and on occasion I have worked with him in local facility security matters I will state that his proven ability and reputation to influence all with whom he comes in contact with posi 20 YEARS AGO March 25 1967 The Ogden Ministerial Association had invited the public to a sunrise service on the steps of the Ogden Municipal Building on Easter Sunday Rev Douglas Bale of the Community Methodist Church would be the speaker Other Easter programs were planned in many Catholic Protestant and LDS churches throughout the area Scott Cannon Bowcutt 21 son of Clifford Bow cutt of Riverside Box Elder County and Mrs Thelma Cannon Paetsch of was killed in Vietnam March 21 while on patrol with the 25th Infantry Division He graduated from Bear River High School and attended Bear River Seminary and Dixie College in St George Utah He was assigned to Vietnam in October 1966 Former Mayor and retired school official Hervin Bunder-so- n was honored with an open house in Brigham City as he observed his 80th birthday Mr Bunderson served as superinteninaccurate dent of schools in Box Elder tively and specifically the youth County from 1933 to 1947 are above reproach Ogden area dairy farmers exThe referenced article obviouspressed disapproval on the curly is slanted to favor the behavior rent campaign to force up dairy of the offending people involved product prices by milk dumping before making a thorough and acinaugurated by the National curate assessment of all of the acFarmers Organization The milk tions and conditions at the time had spread to 30 states dumping of the incident Such poor judgincluding Idaho where a reported ment on the part of the writer of 14240 quarts of milk was poured the article in slandering a dedicatinto canals and down city streets ed police officer doing his duty is Farmers Clair M Fo’kman Plain inexcusable and Dee Hardy Corinne City When the investigation of the while with the incident is complete I’m sure the NFO’s sympathizing protest felt the problem results will exonerate Officer could be in a better accomplished Burner and the Ogden way will owe him a public John Eccles of Ogden had been apology Officer Burner is a proven example of how a police offi- elected to term as a dicer should conduct himself rector of the Rocky Mountain Arthur J Johnson Professional Photographers AssoKaysville ciation Mr Eccles was a portrait 50 YEARS AGO March 25 1937 Pointing out the “exuberance of new and joyous life in the return of spring" Utah Governor Henry Blood proclaimed Monday April 12 Arbor Day and urged its statewide observance President Arnold Ferrin and Lieutenant Governor George H Lowe were chosen as delegates to the Kiwanis International convention in Indianapolis June 24 and 25 They were nominated by Ira A Huggins and were given a unanimous vote At the same meeting Ogden Kiwanians were commended by District Governor Ellertson of Provo for their excellent record Football was in the air and pigskin athletes of Ogden High School were going through spring training drills for the 1937 season of the Ogden team were Frank Berglund fullback and Alan Bader center Pupils of Lorin Farr School in Ogden presented the Operatta “Ladybug Ladybug” at the Twentieth ward hall Students having leading roles were Kathleen Burton Carol Hadley Ronald Bingham Ruth Stratford Raymond Liptrot Rae Sickler Dick Tatroe and Blair Lund Nine new citizens of the United States were presented with American flags in Judge Lester A Wade’s court in Ogden Those receiving their final naturalization papers were Stanley Jensen Joseph Stewart Allen Veto Domenico Ferro Walter August Posnien Maurice Reginald Maria Asuncion Ydo Wilhelmi-n- a Roelink Dokter Thomas Maltman and Matha Ann Nelson Miller Mrs Mary London and Mrs Mertelle Aldrich of the to the women’s auxiliary Veterans of Foreign Wars presented the flags and commercial photographer Name on file Security of foreign affairs not for TV I am a high school student I know that there are many things that I don’t understand now that I may when I get older But there is one thing that really upsets and confuses me about TV news coverage For instance a truckload of toxic nerve gas is traveling through Utah at approximately such and such a time But let’s not stop there The news commentator takes out his little pointer and traces the route for usfor us and every sicko lunatic nutcase around too Sure the public has a right to know but to what extent? Cruising the boulevard not recommended Regarding a recent letter to the editor written by Judy Thompson concerning the “cruising of the boulevard” I would just like to comment on how disgusting I thought it was One doesn’t have to be a policeman’s daughter to know how many rapes have occurred aggravated assaults fights smashed windshields and publicly intoxicated “trayouths frequent the ditional cruise" mentioned in her letter With total astonishment I this letter only convinced it could be a misprint or possible written 20 years ago and lost in the mail There is an insufficient amount of available policemen to adequately protect the unsuspecting and innocent teenager or adults who simply must drive the boulevard after 10 pm Most policemen arc busy returning to their homes only to have them back down to the boulevard in their parents cars The policemen use — they have enough sense Family appreciates t not to subject their passengers to the obscenities foul language and experience this “tradition” of a cruise is Obviously this letter must have been written by someone without an automobile or actual experience in 1987 of cruising the vard The type of real socializing that goes on presently is appalling Is the recent publicity on teenage drug abuse problems not evident enough? If anyone has doubts about how favorable Washington Boulevard is for meeting “new friends" I implore you to ask any policeman about it Trust me he won’t advise you it’s not a smart idea because he’s jealous you’re going to have any dean and meaningful fun It’s just not an intelligent place to kill time Personally I think that cracking down on this loitering is a great idea and if you might ask anyone else they would probably say the same thing ghetto-lik- B Blood Ogden tea 159 99 Big Criarger Cym set 14' too bar tenqth Features 7 6' suae and horse nde r Galvanized Deluxe Play Cym Made of strong 2Vi" tubing 13 J top bar 7 6 leg length SALE 149 9 79'' wood deck with bar handlebar Choose Dinosaur or Heart design L— Reg 34 99 Reg 16999 SALE 159 Jeanette Tcahan and the Tcahan family Ogden SALE Sturdv 2W tubing top bar 7 3 leg 1 14” Scooter Hot pink or purple with dual hand brakes t more' Features tig upstred frame' Choose blue or red orange Rea 79 99 8 6" 7' slide 29 kia green scooter or grey neon blue or lavender Variflcxl Reg 59 99 SALE 54 rvas FftCTlVt SHOP MONDAY THRU OGDEN 1182 Newgate MJII 3f)th St A wall Ave 3E l QQ99 Your Choice: 12” Scooters Choose SALE thanks for your help and concern To all the ladies of the Relief Society and Ladies Auxiliary (UP Old Timers) thank you for the kind gestures that were rendered in our behalf Wc wish to thank each and everyone We will always cherish and remember your thoughtfulness Reg 10999 4 leg Play Gym — 4r7v“ SALE all he'p remembrance of Kenneth R Tcahan the family would like to express our appreciation to everyone who shared their love and concern at the time of our father’s death We would like to thank the Weber County paramedics fire department and Mountain West ambulance crews and all those people who worked so hard to sae lives in our community we To Tony Vanderstappcn would like to express a special In 11 A All TIMS 26 thru 29 1987 SATURDAY 10AM til 9PM SALT LAIC!
